BSN BEACH VOLLEYBALL: SATELLITE & MERRITT ISLAND ADVANCE TO FHSAA REGIONAL SEMIFINALS; ROAD TO TALLAHASSEE NOW DOWN TO TWO

By: Alan Zlotorzynski

When the regional quarterfinals began on Monday afternoon, five Brevard County teams stepped onto the sand with their seasons still alive and Tallahassee still in sight.

By the time the dust โ€” or sand โ€” settled, that number had been cut to two.

Congratulations to Satellite and Merritt Island, who both won their FHSAA regional quarterfinal matchups and will now carry the 321 into the FHSAA Regional Semifinals.

In 2A Region 2, both programs delivered in different ways, but with the same result.

NO. 3 SATELLITE 4 NO. 6 MOUNT DORA 1

Satellite, the No. 3 seed, earned a 4-1 win over No. 6 Mount Dora in a match that showcased exactly why the Scorpions have been one of the most balanced teams in the region all season.

Lines one and two split, but Satellite showcased its depth as the third, fourth, and fifth lines turned what could have been a tight battle into a controlled and complete performance.

The strength of this team continues to be its depth and versatility, with players like Hailey Weza, Brooke Sealey, Ashley Lueders, Sofia Adams, and Ani Vann stepping up in key moments, while contributors such as Harper Lanza, Julie Watt, Brooke Sluzky, and Cadie Little continue to provide stability throughout the lineup.

This is a roster that does not rely on one pairing to carry the load, and when multiple lines are producing at the same time, Satellite becomes a difficult matchup for anyone in the bracket.

NO. 1 MERRITT ISLAND 5 NO. 8 HERITAGE 0

Merritt Island, the top seed in the region, delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day, sweeping No. 8 Heritage 5-0 and never allowing the match to shift.

From the opening serve through the final point, the Mustangs controlled every line, with Bella Becker, Sadie McClellan, Whitney Wisniewski, Khloe Horton, Amber Ives, Reece Loggins, Addie Curb, Delaney Petit, and Gena Walters all contributing to the victory.

The result reinforced what Merritt Island has been throughout the season, a complete team with depth across the board and the ability to overwhelm opponents when they are playing at their best.

The Mustangs earned the No. 1 seed for a reason, and Mondayโ€™s performance showed exactly why they remain one of the top teams in the state.

The path forward now brings new challenges and higher stakes.

NEXT UP:

Satellite will travel to face No. 2 New Smyrna Beach, a team ranked No. 18 in Florida, but one the Scorpions are already familiar with after earning a 3-2 victory earlier this season.

In that match, Satelliteโ€™s second, fourth, and fifth lines delivered the sets needed to secure the win, and they will need a similar level of production again in what is expected to be one of the most competitive matches of the regional semifinals.

Merritt Island will remain at home, where they have been dominant, and will host Bishop Moore, a program that advanced by knocking off the No. 4 seed.

The Mustangs will enter the matchup with the advantage of seeding and home court, but the margin for error is gone, and every line will be tested.

If both teams handle what is in front of them, the possibility of an all-Brevard regional final with a trip to Tallahassee on the line becomes very real, setting the stage for one of the biggest beach volleyball matchups the area has seen since the sport was sanctioned by the FHSAA.

GOOD SEASONS COME TO AN END:

Elsewhere, the postseason run came to an end for three Brevard programs that each left their mark on the season.

Vieraโ€™s season closed with a 3-2 loss to Dwyer in 3A Region 2, finishing the year at 11-5 while proving they could compete with anyone in the state, highlighted by wins over both Satellite and Merritt Island, including the programโ€™s first-ever beach volleyball victory over the Mustangs.

In 1A Region 2, the Brevard HEAT saw their season end with a 4-1 loss to Tampa Prep, finishing 9-4 after capturing the first district championship in program history, a milestone that signals the continued growth of the program.

Heritage finishes 10-8 and has momentum to build on after reaching the FHSAA state tournament.

Now the focus shifts forward.

Two teams remain, both with legitimate paths to Tallahassee, both with the depth and experience to continue their run, and both aware that the margin for error is gone as the postseason moves into its next stage.

BSN SAYS

The field started with five, and now itโ€™s down to two, with Satellite and Merritt Island carrying the 321 into the heart of the postseason.

Both teams have taken different paths to get here, but each has shown the depth, composure, and consistency needed to keep this run going.

The margin is gone, the matchups are tougher, and every line matters now, but if both handle business, the possibility of an all-Brevard showdown with a trip to Tallahassee on the line is right there waiting.
