Have you heard of a plant that's got sap that can cause photo-dermatitis, or very painful skin blisters when exposed to sunlight? Chances are, you've probably heard of one of three species in Michigan: Giant Hogweed, Cow Parsnip, or Wild Parsnip. While all three contain the same troublesome compounds in their sap, it's important to note the differences.

Giant Hogweed is an invasive species that has been found in a few counties throughout Michigan, but has never been positively identified in the Three Shores CISMA region yet. While keeping an eye out for this species, make sure you have proper identification before reporting an infestation. Approximately 2% of plants submitted statewide actually turn out to be Giant Hogweed (source: https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/plant-pest/plant-health-certification-and-export/invasive/giant-hogweed-overview)

One commonly mis-identified plant with Giant Hogweed is Cow Parsnip, a native plant to Michigan. While both have several similarities, there are some distinct differences noted here that can help you determine "is this really Giant Hogweed?"

If you're looking for more information on Giant Hogweed look-a-likes, check out this great source from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/72766.html

If you suspect that you have found Giant Hogweed in Chippewa, Luce, or Mackinac counties, please feel free to give us a call, email, or report your sighting to MISIN https://www.misin.msu.edu/
