Have you ever spotted a Navibulgar freighter passing through the Soo? Part of Bulgaria’s largest shipping fleet, these vessels are true workhorses, capable of carrying enough cargo to fill more than 1,000 semi-trucks. What do you think life is like aboard one of these massive freighters?

Take flight at the Sanderson Field Open House this Saturday, August 8! From 9 a.m.–5 p.m., explore aircraft up close, learn about aviation programs and careers, see airport operations equipment, enjoy live music from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., try different food trucks, and watch a Citation 501 Stallion jet demonstration at 12:30 p.m. Airplane rides will also be offered throughout the day!

Kids can join the coloring contest from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., with winners announced at 2 p.m. Prizes include an airplane ride over Sault Ste. Marie, an Alpine Chocolat Haus gift card, and an airplane plane tag.

The event is free and open to the public at Sanderson Field Airport in Sault Ste. Marie.

Please note: Due to maintenance issues, Ford Tri-Motor rides have been canceled. Rides will still be available with Huron Aviation for $80/person!

In 2024, the City of Sault Ste. Marie officially designated the second Saturday in August as Jane Bamewawagezhikaquay Johnston Schoolcraft Day, honoring the life and legacy of the first known Native American literary writer and the first known female Native American writer. Schoolcraft wrote in both English and Anishinaabe Ojibwe, leaving a lasting impact on American literature and Indigenous storytelling.

Join the free celebration on Saturday, August 8, from 1–4 p.m. near the Johnston House on Historic Water Street. This free community event will feature live music, poetry, storytelling, hands-on activities, and archaeology, offering visitors of all ages an opportunity to learn more about Jane Johnston Schoolcraft and her remarkable legacy.
