I am old enough to remember the Roadless Area Review and Evaluation and all the misinformation surrounding that process of simply identifying areas that may qualify for the designation of roadless. In North Georgia, there was a rash of arson events across the Chattahoochee National Forest. All in the name of keeping the Forest "open" to the public. Now, the disinformation campaign has taken an opposite tack. The owners of public land -we, the public- realized the roadless designation actually provided increased opportunities to recreate (hunt, fish, hike, photograph, and camp, among other activities) rather than restricted them. It has also allowed the Forest Service to avoid spending money on road maintenance. For the uninitiated, dirt roads are the number-one culprit behind siltation in mountain trout streams. Now proponents pushing to repeal the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule are focusing on the contemporary fear of wildfire as the reason for opening protected areas. In fact, the USFS's own records show that roadless areas are routinely managed to reduce the risk of wildfire. It's the height of irresponsibility to degrade these areas with road construction projects that have little to no chance of being maintained. In fact, it could be argued that these areas, of all Forest Service lands, most fully meet the original goal of multiple use. I strongly support maintaining protections for all roadless areas and keeping these public lands a great place to hunt and fish.

Note: public comment deadline is Sept 21.

The Roadless Rule has effectively protected and managed public lands for over two decades.

Roadless areas protect some of the last intact trout and salmon habitat in the country. The USDA just released its plan to eliminate those protections nationwide.

The public comment period is now open through September 21st.

Submit your comment today and urge USDA to keep strong protections in place for roadless areas: https://bit.ly/3Si2MVE

Adding a personal note about why these public lands matter to you makes a real difference.

Unicoi Outfitters Fishing Report - 9/4/26

Here’s your holiday weekend report:best bets are river bass at low light, stockers before lunch, and little wild trout at dawn, but only on north slopes or really high on taller NC and TN mountains. Streams are low, clear, and hot from the heat wave and scarce showers. These conditions enhance river bassin’ but kill mountain trouting, except for our two cold tailwaters.

Remember our monthly open house in Sautee tonite and the Soque River Watershed’s fundraiser this month.

How to tie Joseph’s shallow water baitfish pattern. This fly has been working great when fishing for stripers on the lake.

What is the best fly tying thread on the market? For many tyers thread is their go to and for good reason! Their thread lineup is great especially the super strong nano silk thread. If you haven't tried it out yet check it out.

As we all wait out this hot summer, it’s a good time to do some homework and make some fall fishing plans. Here’s an excellent article on Lanier stripers that features UO guide Joseph Clark and his mentor, one of UO’s best buddies, Henry Cowen.

https://www.wired2fish.com/fishing-tips/follow-the-birds-to-find-where-sodium-free-southern-stripers-are

Ole Hank the Yank literally wrote the book on inland striper fishing. Pick up a copy soon from our Sautee store and get ready for fall striper blitzes on Lanier.

Check your 8-weight outfits this month and make sure you have fresh leaders, tippets, and a handful of Cowen’s Somethin Else streamers for October. It’s a fun homework assignment in your air-conditioned den. Before you know it, crisp fall mornings will return. And stripers will re-emerge from the cool depths of Lanier and be within striking distance of our flies once again.

Good luck with your fall striper prep!

Unicoi Outfitters Fishing Report 8/28/26

It’s still hot and dry, and our streams are low and clear, for the most part. River bassin’ has been good, while headwater trouting has been poor. Tailwater trout and fresh stockers are still providing good action for trouting fans, both bait and fly. We can sure use some overnite low air temperatures around 60 degrees to rekindle the trout bite up here. In the meantime, we’ve been heading real high in the mountains to find a few fish. Looking to get a small stream outfit for bluelining? While you don't need a reel with a high performance drag for the fish in little creeks a reel with a good durable aluminum build is the way to go for long term use on the creeks in the Southeast.
