🐴 Well, today we're going to talk about something a little different… PONIES! 🐴
Most of the time, I write about horses, but did you know a pony isn't just a baby horse or a short horse? There's actually a difference, and there's some pretty interesting history behind these little equine partners!
And who better to dedicate this post to than Freckles, the one and only pony at the ranch! ❤️ At 33 years old, he's still helping me teach a whole bunch of kids. Now that's what I call still having a job to do!
So let's learn a little something about ponies!
🐴 First, what's the difference between a horse and a pony?
Horses and ponies belong to the same species, Equus caballus. One of the main differences is their size.
In the United States, ponies are generally considered to be equines measuring under 14.2 hands at the withers when mature. For those who aren't familiar with horse measurements, that's 58 inches at the shoulder. And just so you know, one hand equals 4 inches!
Of course, there are exceptions depending on the breed and the classification being used. Some breeds are called horses even when they're pony-sized, so there's more to it than just pulling out a measuring tape!
🐴 Ponies have a pretty interesting history!
Over the years, ponies have helped people in all kinds of ways. Depending on the breed and where they came from, they were used for riding, pulling carts, carrying loads, and working on farms.
Many traditional pony breeds developed in places where they needed to be hardy and make good use of the food available. Their strength and size made them valuable working partners.
And NO, ponies aren't just for little kids! They can be riding and driving partners and take part in all kinds of equestrian activities.
🐴 Here's another thing people sometimes get confused about.
A baby horse is called a foal. As it grows up, it becomes a mature horse or pony, depending on its type and breed. A pony doesn't automatically become a horse just because it gets older!
❤️ Now, let's talk about our Freckles!
Freckles is our one and only pony at the ranch, and he's helping me teach children about horse parts, grooming, handling, and learning how to care for these amazing animals.
Sometimes learning looks a little different around here. A child can look at a picture on a worksheet, then walk over to Freckles and see that same body part in real life. That's hands-on learning, and you just can't beat it!
I believe our older equine partners still have so much to give. They can continue to be part of a child's learning experience as long as we're mindful of their individual needs and make their comfort a priority.
Freckles may not be the biggest guy in the barn, but he's certainly making his mark on the kids who get to learn from him. ❤️
So today, we're tipping our hats to the little pony with a big job!
And knowing Freckles, he's probably just happy to be getting some extra attention. 😂🐴
