What if the way you praise your child today shapes how they handle failure tomorrow?

Researchers from Stanford University conducted a now-famous experiment (Mueller & Dweck, 1998) where 5th graders were asked to solve puzzles. After their first success:

One group was praised for being smart (“You must be really intelligent!”).

The other was praised for working hard (“You must have worked hard!”).

What followed changed the field of developmental psychology.

The Outcome: When presented with harder tasks:

The “smart” group gave up faster and showed less enjoyment.

The “effort” group persisted longer, performed better, and enjoyed the challenge.

The Science Behind It:

Praising intelligence fosters a fixed mindset — the belief that abilities are innate and unchangeable. It creates pressure to “stay smart” and avoid mistakes.

Praising effort nurtures a growth mindset — the belief that abilities grow with effort, strategy, and persistence. It invites curiosity and resilience.

- Dr. Carol Dweck (Stanford psychologist): Praising traits can undermine motivation and increase performance anxiety.

- Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett (Emotional development expert): Children learn emotional meaning from their caregivers’ feedback loops, not just their instructions.

- Harvard Center on the Developing Child: Resilience grows when children are supported by responsive relationships and learn to manage stress, not avoid it.

Children don’t just hear praise — they absorb what it says about who they are.

Instead of “You’re so smart,”
Say:
- “You worked through that even when it was tough.”
- “I love how you tried different ways to solve it.”

These phrases do more than boost confidence — they build internal motivation, emotional regulation, and a healthy tolerance for failure.

Because confidence isn’t the absence of struggle. It’s the ability to face it and keep going.
