We all love dipping sauces! They can add such wonderful flavors and taste to a meal! However, dipping sauces can be high in added sugars, sodium, and unnecessary fats. These yummy sauces can quickly turn a healthy meal into a high calorie, high sodium meal with limited nutrition. These flavor accessories can be the tipping point between hitting or exceeding your daily nutrition goals. Tip: Next time you use a sauce with your meal, actually take out a measuring spoon and count how many you use. Some meals at a restaurant can have more than 6 tablespoons of BBQ sauce per serving. It’s the middle of the day and you stop for a “pick-me-up” at your favorite coffee shop. Without realizing it you have just consumed 300-400 empty calories. This could be 20% of the calories your body truly needs in a day. Additionally, these calories will not help you feel “full” because they have no nutritional value. When you have an ache or pain the first place you probably visit is the doctor. But what if there was a prescription that had far more benefit to your health than a pill that will probably keep you coming back for more refills?? Well there is a prescription that WORKS… it’s called EXERCISE! More specifically, resistance training. The Department of Exercise Science says, “the benefits of resistance training include prevention and management of type 2 diabetes, reducing HbA1c, and improving insulin sensitivity. Resistance training may also enhance cardiovascular health by reducing resting blood pressure, decreasing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, and increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Resistance training has been shown to promote bone development, with studies showing 1% to 3% increase in bone mineral density.” Even light weights can drastically change your health! We are often asked what the “best” workout plan is. Drew Edmonds, owner of Train Me 24/7, says, “the best workout plan is one you will DO and STICK WITH.” We often see people go from a sedentary lifestyle immediately into a program where they are exercising 5 to 7 times per week. This is typically a short-lived workout plan because they can’t commit to this grueling schedule long term and there is typically a high burn out rate. This creates a continuous loop of starting and stopping exercise plans. Try committing to 2 - 3 days per week, gradually adding days and intensity. With a sensible strategy and some consistent effort… you WILL see results.
One more tip… try incorporating activities you actually enjoy! A workout plan doesn’t mean you have to live in the gym. Go for a walk on a nature trail, take a paddleboard lesson, or join a dance class! Working out CAN be FUN!
