Who is Scott Burr from Scott Burr ?

We have Scott Burr coming to Empower for four Saturday sessions this October.

Scott is a 3rd-degree black belt who has spent years learning directly from Steve Maxwell and Rickson Gracie, but his contribution to Jiu Jitsu goes well beyond the mat.

He co-authored Worth Defending with Richard Bresler. Which everyone should read for some cool history in Jiu Jitsu. Co-authored The Chris Haueter Book which is available now, and helped bring Robert Drysdale’s Opening Closed Guard to life as its editor and designer.

That kind of background matters because Scott doesn’t just teach Jiu Jitsu. He has spent years studying the history, concepts, and details behind Jiu Jitsu.

This October, we get four opportunities to learn from him, with a focus on takedowns and top pressure.

Not every kid needs the same thing as another kid.

Some are visual
Some needs hands on
Some need to do it with a coach.

Here at Empower I tell parents that I let the kids be kids first and foremost. Jiu Jitsu is second. We use Jiu Jitsu as a tool to tech kids and to help find their learning style.

Every kid has a different path.

These are the moments I love most about coaching kids classes at Empower Jiu Jitsu.

I don’t really celebrate the “jiu jitsu wins”, tapping someone out, scoring more points, or being better than the kid across from you.

With kids, I care a lot more about what jiu jitsu can give them as a tool.

We celebrate when a kid is nervous but still steps out on the mat.

We celebrate when they try something new and have to be bad at it first.

We celebrate the process of struggling with a skill, practicing it, getting frustrated, trying again, and eventually figuring it out.

That little celebration in the photo isn’t really about jiu jitsu.

It’s about a kid realizing, “I couldn’t do that before, and now I can.”

That’s the kind of win I want them to learn to chase, not points.

We’re excited to have Scott Burr back for a series of Saturday classes at Empower Jiu Jitsu.

Scott is a 3rd-degree black belt under Rickson with deep experience and a strong teaching style that helps make the details of Jiu-Jitsu actually usable.

This series will focus on:

Takedowns
Top pressure
Connecting the stand-up exchange to strong control on the ground

Dates:
Saturday, October 3
Saturday, October 10
Saturday, October 24
Saturday, October 31

Time: 11:00 AM–1:00 PM
Cost: $30 drop-in per session

You can come to one session or all four.

If you want to sharpen your ability to get the fight to the ground and stay in strong positions once you get there, this is a great opportunity.

Every coach has an uke, training partner that just gets you.

Sometimes you can just start training to some jams and feed off each other and next thing you know 30 mins went by.

When demonstrating almost no words need to be said for the expectation.

Thats this guy with his big ol smile Justin Heinle | More Human . He likes to look hard but he is an amazing training partner.

The hidden things that no one sees unless you know us. This smile probably only came on because while demoing technique we were picking on each other, and whispering sweet nothing while everyone watches our amazing demo :)
