Just east of Atlanta there is a community that Black folks quite literally built for themselves, lot by lot. 🧱 Starting in the 1920s, families in Scottdale bought little parcels of land for five dollars down and a dollar a week, then put up their own homes near the cotton mill and the rock quarries.
The county gave them almost nothing at first. No paved streets, no running water. So they paid their own dues, poured their own concrete, and raised up thirteen churches and their own schools, Hamilton High and Robert Shaw, named after their own people. 🖤 When integration closed those schools in 1969, folks said it cut the very lifeline of the community.
