Boxing is a puzzle.

Position, timing, distance, strengths and weaknesses. You make a move, your opponent reacts, and you adjust. Sometimes you attack, sometimes you defend, and sometimes the smartest thing you can do is wait for the right opportunity.

That’s one of the things I love most about boxing. Yes, it’s physical—but the strategy is what makes it so interesting.

When you first start boxing, you’re mostly thinking about yourself. Where are my hands? Am I standing right? What punch comes next?

As you get better, you start paying more attention to the person in front of you. What do they do when I jab? Do they move back? Cover up? Counter? Can I get them to react one way so I can attack another?

That’s when boxing really starts getting fun.

The punches are the tools. Knowing when, where and why to use them is the skill.

The better you get, the more you realize you’re not just throwing punches.

You’re trying to figure them out. 🥊

After being at sparring on Saturday, I had a few thoughts I wanted to share after watching Nick and Taylor work.

Taylor is younger and a fair amount taller than Nick, but they’re around the same weight. Nick is very strong, works hard, and has good technique. But he found it frustrating trying to compete with Taylor and finally said, “He’s just too good.”

But what I saw wasn’t necessarily that Taylor was “too good.” A lot of it came down to volume, conditioning, and most importantly, **changing angles.**

When someone has an advantage in speed, reach, or movement, you don’t want to just stand in front of them and try to outwork them. You have to make them reset.

So this week, our focus is **changing angles.**

We’ll be throwing a flurry of punches, stepping out to the right or left, and using that last punch to help create the angle. From there, we’ll work the counter that makes the most sense based on the angle and direction we moved.

Attack. Change the angle. Attack again.

Sometimes the difference isn’t being stronger, faster, or even “better.” It’s putting yourself in a better position.

See you at the gym.

Speed beats power. Timing beats speed. 🥊

This week we’re working on one of my favorite examples of that principle: slipping and throwing at the same time.

It’s a tricky move, but when you get the timing right, it’s incredibly effective. Instead of slipping a punch and then countering, you’re making them miss while your counter is already on its way.

This week we’ll be drilling:

🥊 Slip to the left as your opponent throws the right, while throwing your overhand right.

🥊 Slip to the left as they throw the jab, while throwing your left.

We saw a beautiful example of this kind of timing in this weekend’s fight between Denise Gomes and Yan Xiaonan. It’s a great reminder that you don’t always have to be stronger or faster—you have to be in the right place at the right time.

Speed beats power. Timing beats speed.

See you in the gym this week. We’re drilling it!

This week we’re working on the high-low principle. 🥊

You’ll often hear coaches yelling from the corner, “Go to the body!” There’s a reason for that.

Body shots drain stamina, give you a bigger target to hit, and most importantly, force your opponent to defend another area.

If you only attack the head, your opponent only has to defend the head. Start changing levels—head, body, head—and now they have choices to make. That’s when openings start to appear.

🥊 Jab to the body → 1, 2 to the head
🥊 Jab to the head → 1, 2 to the body
🥊 1, 2 → 3B
🥊 1 → 4B
🥊 2 → 3B

🥊 THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

This week we’re continuing to work on range—and choosing the right punches for that range.

A good technician doesn’t just have skill. They know which tool to use and when to use it.

🥊 Long Range: 1–1–2
🥊 Long → Mid: 1–2–3
🥊 Mid Range: 2–3–2
🥊 Close Range: 4–3–6

Each combination has a purpose. Each works best at a certain distance.

The goal isn’t just to memorize combinations—it’s to understand why you’re throwing them and when to use them.

Having the right tool for the right job is everything.

This week, we’re all technicians.
