6 week Lean Down Challenge is a wrap! With a huge thanks to James Brusard, at Pulse Fitness Scottsdale, Shanna, and I not only met our goals. We crushed them!! With a 5% fat loss goal for Shanna, she killed with a final number of 7% gone! I lost a total of 23.7 lbs with a 20 lb goal set for me!

One big challenge that exists in the fitness industry is the balance between performance and programming.

There is no doubt that training is partially a performance. The energy of an intense workout with the theatrical encouragement of a coach is something that can send a pulse (haha, see what I did there) of energy pumping through your veins.

However, any well educated coach knows that a scientifically based program includes varied levels of intensity across several weeks or months, and is designed with flexibility to adjust for a client’s movement efficiency from day to day.

Use your own weight for resistance instead. No gym? No problem. Bodyweight exercises involve using your own mass as resistance in a workout. They’re convenient because they require no equipment and can be done almost anywhere. They’re also terrific at building your body’s foundation and can be easily tailored to your personal needs based on the exercise and number of repetitions. Bodyweight exercises are among my favorite, most underrated ways to get a workout in.

The term “thoracic spine” is used in application as the general region of the upper back, and can be defined as the area of the spine that attaches to the rib cage, from the neck to the abdomen area.

This is a complex system, and I personally like to make sure to remind clients that it is more than just the “spine”. It is complex because it is dependent on factors occurring in the rib cage, shoulder blade, neck and other portions of the upper back.

This week, we chose to speak on the Thoracic Spine first, because we find it to be the lowest hanging fruit in terms of improving your golf swing, and I know the majority of the clients we see at Pulse Fitness are lacking in this area.
