As a SCUBA instructor and amateur underwater photographer, my office is the ocean, my job is to help people see a world previously unaccessible, and my goal is to help the world appreciate the wonders of the sea as much as I do.

One of my favorite birds in the whole world!

Creature Highlight: The Galapagos Penguin — Inside Under Dive & Travel If you’ve been diving for any length of time, you probably have your list of creatures you’d love to see, and have also probably ticked off your fair share of the usual suspects—manta rays, frogfish, maybe even a hammerhead shark or two. But there’s one critter you probably didn’t know you...

The spice of life

During my second week in Komodo, my guests and I found a dazzling array of tiny creatures to admire between passes from manta rays, sharks and turtles.

Here is a brief compilation of some of the small wonders we found including shrimp, nudibranchs, juvenile fish and flatworms.

Which is your favorite?

Treasure

Move slowly, with intention and keen awareness, and the treasures of the world will avail themselves to you.

During one of our 4 nights dives this week in Komodo, while combing the reef for macro life, we found a spinecheek anemonefish acting more territorial than usual. Upon closer inspection we realized it was guarding its eggs plastered to the coral above its host anemone.

I am tickled by this photo, thinking of hundreds of eyes looking up at me while I stare back at them. Have you ever seen so many eyes in one frame?

For the nudiphiles…

Nudibranchs and flatworms may be relatively small creatures, but they have huge presence, sporting astonishing color, pattern and size variations. While larger animals appear sporadically throughout a dive, these tiny organisms are nearly omnipresent.

The nudibranch and flatworm diversity is off the charts in the Indo-Pacific. During our first week in Komodo we spotted at least 25 different species. These are just some of the ones I was able to capture!

One of my favorite finds from our first week in Komodo!

This place, known for its astounding diversity and abundance of marine life, has a way of reminding me to slow down and appreciate the details. Although the manta rays, huge schools of fish, hunting reef sharks and other large creatures tend to draw more attention, the macro-life deserves the spotlight as well.

Our guide spotted these two Coleman shrimp perched atop their host fire urchin during one of our 4 night dives. I can’t wait to get back in the water tomorrow for the start of week two!

Are you interested in exploring Komodo? I’ll be releasing dates for 2026 shortly!

I had a frightening experience recently and I have been struggling over whether to share it with you or not. But I decided that the lessons I learned deserve a wider audience than just myself, and that stigmas live on through silence.

On a dive safari in Mexico, I noticed some strange symptoms after our first day of diving and quickly found out I had developed cutis marmorata, commonly known as the skin bends.

I had adhered faithfully to my dive computers instructions and followed all of the normal safety protocols, but I still got bent. I felt bewildered, scared, embarrassed and disappointed, amongst other things. Fortunately my case was mild and I have no lasting health repercussions.

Once I was clearly medically, I realized I had an opportunity to help educate myself and others about decompression sickness. The subject is shrouded in uncertainty scientifically, and often discussion amongst recreational divers is misguided. So I wrote about my experience on my blog. Follow the link in my bio to read the fully story.

By posting this I am hoping to help educate you and others about decompression sickness, and to help you avoid it. If you can learn anything from my experience and become a safer diver in any way then I’ve done my job.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments. Dive safely, and happy bubbling!
