⏱ Why 7–8 days post-ovulation matters
After fertilization, the equine embryo remains in the oviduct for several days before entering the uterus. Embryo flushes are typically performed 7 to 8 days after ovulation, when the embryo is free within the uterine lumen and large enough to recover safely.

Flushing too early may result in no embryo being present, while flushing too late may decrease recovery efficiency. This makes precise ovulation tracking essential in embryo transfer programs.

The equine placenta is diffuse and microcotyledonary.
It has an outer maternal surface (allantochorion) — red and velvety — and an inner fetal surface (allantoamnion) — smooth and pale.

When laid out correctly, it forms the characteristic “F” shape, allowing systematic evaluation.

The placenta provides objective information about the progression of pregnancy.

Vascular insufficiency, ascending infection, inflammation, or premature separation may cause structural changes such as thickening, edema, or exudate — even when mare and foal appear clinically normal at birth.

Placental examination should be considered a standard component of post-foaling assessment.

The placenta should be expelled within 3 hours of delivery.

Retention — especially at the horn tips — increases the risk of:
