New Lighting Planned for Magnolia Playfield

Seattle Parks and Recreation is moving forward with a lighting upgrade at Magnolia Playfield, replacing the aging system with modern LED fixtures designed to improve visibility while cutting down on glare for nearby homes.

The playfield is part of a broader citywide effort to modernize park lighting. In Magnolia, the project has drawn interest from both athletes who rely on evening field time and neighbors concerned about light spilling into surrounding houses.

The new system is intended to address both.

Seattle Parks says the upgraded lights will provide more even coverage across the field, improving safety for sports and recreation, while also reducing light trespass and excess brightness in the night sky. The switch to LED is also expected to lower energy use over time.

Design work is nearly complete. The project is now in its final review phase, with construction expected to begin this summer and finish in early 2027.

The total cost is estimated at $1.6 million, funded through the Seattle Metropolitan Parks District.

The playfield remains open daily, with current lights still available for scheduled use.

Community members will have opportunities to weigh in as the project moves forward, as Seattle Parks looks to balance improved playfield access with neighborhood livability.
