❄️ Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, casting most of your sanctuary system in darkness....but some of our residents, like this little friend, are thriving without sunlight year round! 🌌

⭐️ This ghostly mystery mollusk was photographed at the Davidson Seamount by a remotely operated vehicle, nearly 5,000 feet below the surface of NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Tune into your inner abyssal zone and embrace todays shadows knowing there are brighter days ahead. 💫

Did you know coral is an animal? Also this is such good info to know regarding coral bleaching.

: Are corals animals? 🤔

Yes, indeed! They live in a symbiotic relationship 🤝with tiny algae called zooxanthellae. These algae provide corals with food and oxygen, and in return, the corals provide them with a safe place to live. However, when corals are exposed to high temperatures🌡️, pollution🚮, or changes in the water’s chemistry, they expel zooxanthellae.

Without the tiny algae, the coral loses its color and turns white⚪, hence the term “bleaching.” And if left in a bleached state for too long, the corals will die. Coral reefs are essential to the health of our planet 🌎: When they suffer, so do the ecosystems and the people that depend on them.

Take action and learn how you can help protect these important ecosystems for generations to come: https://coral.org/en/blog/what-is-coral-bleaching-and-why-should-you-care/ #:~:text=The%20global%20coral%20bleaching%20monitoring,in%20need%20of%20our%20protection.

Stunning.

I don't know why this hasn't received more publicity, but this fifty-foot sculpture was unveiled recently in South Dakota.
It's called 'Dignity' and was done by artist Dale Lamphere to honor the women of the Sioux Nation.
