June, 2024 We recently had a promotion party for Spencer Bright, Michael Newman and Douglas White. Promotions in the Karate are important. Each promotion is valuable. One obtains rank, an obvious result, and sometimes includes a title, an important characteristic. Then there is the matter of motivation and purpose. This serves the need for accomplishment and more importantly, motivation. This is powerful. Motivation feeds discipline. Discipline is the cornerstone of the serious Karate student. This is the true value of promotions.
These men have accomplished something very valuable.
* The Green belt - NOT a beginner
* The Black belt - NOW a student of Karate!
* The Shihan - a Teacher!
Build on these promotions and you can accomplish almost anything! For real!

Well, it’s time for a humorous post. This is 2nd injury from toenails and fingernails in 6 months. Whaaat?
Not at all a serious injury, but annoying, especially when it occurs on a hand—we use our hands about 98% of our waking hours! Takes forever to heal!! 😂!! And in the shower? There’s a real comedy: the one-handed shower! 😂😂!!
Anyway, you train Karate or any contact sport, keep your nails trimmed. Show’s over, let’s get back to training.

I am reminded occasionally of how easy it is to wander away from the Karate. There are reasons people wander, and there are solutions as well. I believe the main solution has to do with motivation.
Recently I've been publishing about Karate promotions. We celebrate promotions because they are the result of good performance, training and motivation.
In Karate, the correlation between performance and training and motivation is essentially simple (but not always easy). As a student, you get promoted because you are motivated to train and perform. Take away the motivation and you are just training. Take away the training and you have neither motivation nor performance. Motivation is the link to training and performance. Motivation is also what keeps you on the path to Karate-Do, the Way of Karate.
Karate is a lifestyle, as I learned in Okinawa. It is a lot more than kicking & punching. And so this correlation between training, motivation and performance can be applied to work, school and many other aspects of life.
One of my favorite quotes:
"Karate can be a life long and rewarding study, not only of fighting skills, self-defense techniques and accomplishments, but of strength, inspiration and motivation."

Congratulations to Michael N on his promotion to 3 Kyu on October 6! There’s always pressure to perform and surprises here & there. And that’s good—he handled the pressure and carried on!
