TODAY IN HISTORY...
Cal Anderson in 1987 becomes the state’s first openly gay legislator when the King County Council appoints him to a vacant seat. Anderson goes on to win election to the House from Seattle’s 43rd District, and in 1994, he wins election to the state Senate. He is a decorated combat veteran of the Army in Vietnam and calls himself "a Democrat who happens to be gay." Anderson dies in 1995 of an illness related to AIDS.
