Got a parts bin that runneth over? Got a bunch of accent parts rattling around in a shoebox? Got anxiety about what to do when the BIG GRAY slaps its wet wings on your shoulders? Time to put all those parts and anxieties to work, with the Bike Works Build Off™! From November 1 to January 28 we’re having the best kinda contest there ever was, a bike build off. Use our bike shop, warehouse sales, and open shop to mine for parts and use tools you need but don’t need to own. Track all of your parts on an official manifest and enter your bike for judging at the 2027 Bike Works Open House. Mark your calendars now, and stay tuned for updates- we will release a sign up form and next steps closer to the start date. Here’s an example of a bike somebody built. Who doesn’t like bikes?

“We have a lot of hardtails,” is the message. Staff at the shop are up to their ears in hardtails. You know this weather we’re having? Crystalline days, cool air, warm sun, beautiful blue skies? That, comrades, is hardtail weather. This kinda weather only rolls around one or two or three times a year, so if you’re finding yourself hungry at lunchtime, it’s probably a signal that you should eat. If you’re still hungry after that, well, your inner shredder is trying to tell you something. HARDTAIL CITY aka Bike Works is open all weekend, worth noting we are open before, during, and after the warehouse sale on Saturday. Used up our comma quota for the week in this post.

Hear us out: spending money is a political act. Buying new in the age of programmed obsolescence contributes to the cycle of waste, BUT buying lightly used materials when and where you can interrupts the capitalistic cycle. Speaking of when and where you might interrupt capitalism, we have a warehouse sale this Saturday, October 17th, from 1-4PM.

If you’re feeling tired just imagine how these tires are feeling. Hint: these tires feel supple. Take a nap!

Tonight we have a special bike on display at the Pioneer Square art walk. Head over to Sound Break from 5pm-9pm to check it out! It’s a 1985 Ritchey Timberwolf, a 17” fillet brazed rigid MTB frame with the first-generation Shimano Deore XT “deer head” groupset specifically designed for mountain biking. This bike was hand built by Tom Ritchey himself in the early 80’s. Ritchey is a US pioneer in modern frame building and the first production mountain bike builder/manufacturer in the history of the sport.

This bike was previously owned by Harumi P. Super, an influential African-American woman in the bike industry who played a founding role in the United Bicycle Tool and United Bicycle Institute in the early 80’s, which has helped train many bike mechanics over the years. Ms. Super is now 90 years old and resides in France. The bike was generously donated to Bike Works by her relative Derek. It has been kept in great condition and restored to ready-to-ride condition this year by Nick at Bike Works.

Last week we had some guests in the warehouse, and during the tour one of them said, very seriously, “Listen, you have a lot of bikes in here.” This is true. We do have a lot of bikes. You know what else is true? Many of these bikes have been here before, and we can prove it. In the second and third tiles we see the Pigboy™ Logo and the current logo. Almost every bike we sell in the shop is a donated and refurbished machine. It is not uncommon for us to receive a donation of a bicycle that was initially sold in the shop. When we talk about the Seattle Bicycle Ecosystem this is what we mean. A nicerish bike can have multiple lives and multiple riders. People buy bikes from us and use them and understand that if they bring the bike back when they’re done, for whatever the reason, it’ll get reused. It’s a beautiful circle, kind of like a wheel if you think about it. This Saturday we are having a warehouse sale and there are so many vintage mountain bikes. Schwinns, Bridgestones, Konas, you name it. Listen, we have a lot of bikes in here. Come by and take a look. It’s rainy season, have you seen the forecast?

What do you say when the free bin is bigger than ever? You say the free bin is bigger than ever and you invite people over to get free stuff. We’ll be selling as-is bikes and parts too, there’s plenty of those things. Among the free things: jerseys, jackets, and so on. Did you know there was environmentally friendly oil? Saturday September 26th from 1-4PM at the warehouse (not the shop). See you there!

It was so fun hanging out with folks from Patagonia Seattle last week. They came in for a Dirty Bike Party and helped streamline the workflow for our mechanics by cleaning up donated bicycles. All together they cleaned up 10 bicycles, saving our staff almost a week’s worth of labor.

This strange rig came through today and got everyone scratching their heads. A road bike with a suspension fork! A protogravel-getter? Shop Director Kellen says, “I have never seen this bike before. It seems like a precursor to the modern gravel bike. A really strange anachronistic bicycle. REI was onto something here. I want to see somebody rebuild this as their gravel racer.” The next warehouse sale is September 26th, and until then this bike will be waiting patiently for whatever happens next.

R&R staff are on a much needed staff camping trip, and the devo team is handing incoming donations. Check out this ride! Raphael Geminiani was a French racer whose family fled fascist violence in Italy when he was a child. This is a heavy bike, but it has some lovely details, like the cottered Nervar cranks and the Huret derailers. This isn’t a high end bike, but it’s beautiful and has plenty of stories to tell.
