Tonight we read John 19:31–42.
One of the verses that stood out to me was John 19:34:
“Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.”
I proposed the question: What Old Testament verse references the piercing of Jesus Christ?
We looked at Isaiah 53:5:
“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”
I then asked a follow up question: How did Jesus being pierced and crushed bring peace and healing to us?
The answer is found in the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. Because Jesus took the punishment for our sins upon Himself, those who place their faith in Him can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and receive eternal life.
As John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We read John 19:17-24 tonight.
One of the verses that stood out to me was John 19:26-30.
It reads:
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
I propose the question: When Jesus said, “It is finished,” what did He mean?
Jesus was declaring that the payment for sin was complete.
He took the punishment for sin upon Himself so believers could be forgiven and reconciled to God. The work of salvation was accomplished through His sacrifice on the cross.
That’s why 2 Corinthians 5:21 says:
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
What stood out to me tonight is that Jesus did not say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.”
The debt of sin was paid in full through Jesus Christ.

We read John 19:17-24 tonight.
One of the verses that stood out to me was John 19:19-22.
It read:
“Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.””
When Pilate wrote “Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews,” he was trying to mock the Jews because they rejected Jesus Christ as King. But even through the mocking, God was still fulfilling prophecy and revealing who Jesus truly is.
That is why throughout John 19 we see prophecy being fulfilled. In Psalm 22:18 it says:
“They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.”
Even the soldiers casting lots for Jesus’ clothing fulfilled Scripture.
Jesus Christ is not just King of the Jews, but King eternal over all creation. That is why 1 Timothy 1:17 says:
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”
That’s what stood out to me tonight.

Shout out to my guys and for helping lead the Bible study yesterday while I am currently out of town. I appreciate you guys stepping up.
We read part of John 19 yesterday.
While reading John 19 during my quiet time, what really stood out to me was John 19:1-3:
“Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They clothed Him in a purple robe and went up to Him again and again, saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ And they slapped Him in the face.”
They were trying to mock and ridicule Jesus Christ for being King, but without realizing it, they were actually proclaiming His true identity.
That’s why Isaiah 53:5 says:
“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”
And in Colossians 1:15-18 says :
“The Son ( Jesus Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”
That’s what stood out to me tonight.

Tonight’s reading covers John 18:30–38
One verse that really stood out was John 18:37
“Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘Are You a king then?’
Jesus answered, ‘You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’”
What stood out to me is that Jesus clearly says He is a King, and in verse 36 He says, “My kingdom is not of this world.”
A lot of people say Jesus was just a prophet.
But how can a prophet claim to be a King with a kingdom not of this world?
Jesus Christ is not just a prophet, He is God in the flesh.
That’s why Colossians 1:15–18 says:
“He ( Jesus Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.”
That’s what stood out to me tonight.

Tonight’s reading covers Gospel of John 18:22–30.
One verse that really stood out was John 18:22:
“When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.”
I asked the question:
Why did Jesus allow the soldier to struck him in the face?
One answer pointed to prophecy, referencing Book of Isaiah 53:5–7 , that His suffering was foretold.
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not resist. Like a lamb led to the slaughter, He remained silent.
Another answer was that Jesus demonstrated perfect humility , showing us how to trust God even in the middle of suffering and injustice.
What stood out to me is this,
Jesus allowed it because He loves us.
His suffering wasn’t weakness, it was intentional sacrifice. He had the power to stop it at any moment, but He chose to suffer and endure the cross for us.
That’s what stood out to me.
