On Sunday we had a canoe blessing for our brand new OC6, ‘Alala. A Malolo Pro that weighs only 100 pounds. ‘Alala makes it 7 OC6 canoes for our growing club and our third Malolo having just purchased Ka ‘Io last year. ‘Alala continues our naming trend of using native Hawaiian birds. In Hawaiian, ‘Alala is a type of intelligent crow but it also has a double meaning of a kind of war cry or chant reminiscent of the vocal bird. We hope to bring a little bit of that intelligence and energy on the race course!

On Saturday, Sand Point hosted the championship race of the winter series. Thank you to all the racers and volunteers that made Saturday’s Championship race happen. The weather was great and the vibes were better! Thank you also to everyone who helped us honor the memory of Kai Bartlett. His legacy lives on through this sport we all love 💙

It feels pretty special that on a random January practice in the middle of winter in Seattle that we still have so many club members showing up. We filled 7 canoes yesterday plus an additional few OC1s. We’re thankful to have so many members that are active throughout the year 💙

On September 7th, Sand Point was thrilled to host Seattle Firefighters and their families for the first ever Blazing Paddles Challenge. Eight teams who had little or no paddling experience came out and had a blast competing against each other in short head-to-head sprint races. Surprisingly, almost every race was a photo finish! Our favorite part was seeing the enthusiasm of all the teams. Not only were they excited to race and gave it all they had, but they designed team logos, made custom jerseys, and wore matching outfits! With everyone already looking forward to next year and figuring out how to get faster, we can’t wait to host it again.
