Well folks, this isn’t the news we hoped to share, but we must once again cancel the race this year. Some races have returned, adhering to the state’s guidelines for outdoor recreation, but unfortunately the aspects that make Dizzy Daze so special mean we won’t be able to hold it.

If you were registered for 2020 and rolled over to 2021, then you’ll be rolled over to 2022. If, like many of us, you have been hit hard financially by the pandemic, then please contact us and we’ll send a refund of 70%. In the meantime, stay safe, wash your hands, and wear a damn mask.

The 2020 race has been canceled :( We will get back to you with next steps.

Seattle Parks & Recreation COVID-19 impacts: All recreation facilities, including community centers & pools, closed until at least April 13 - Parkways Free shower program to remain open Organized outdoor activities and permitted events also canceled As health officials and scientists have noted, we likely had 1,100 active COVID-19 infections as of March 10 in our region. If we do not act, there could be more than 25,000 cases by early April. As yo...

Dizzy Daze 2020: Zombie Plague Edition

Welcome to Seattle. We’re out of N95 respirators, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and bottled water, which is weird, because we’re all a bunch of lefties who decry the waste of bottled water. Things are decidedly abnormal.

So… You’re asking yourself: “Am I running next weekend?” And I’m here to say it’s a definite “Maybe. Probably. Not if you feel sick.”

Here at Two Cats Running Central Command we have been closely monitoring the situation and adjusting our stock portfolios as the situation on the ground has changed over the past week. We’re long on alcohol sanitizer and telecommuting but short cruise lines. And we have contacted Seattle Parks and Recreation to get their official word on how to handle things. They didn’t yank our permit, and said they didn’t have plans to do so, but they’re taking it one day at a time. (Which is appropriate given the theme of our race.)

So… We are planning to be at the start line Saturday at 6 a.m. for check-in if you’re well and want to run.

We have about 100 runners signed up, but for most of the day you will be spread out around the lake. This will give plenty of opportunity to maintain personal space, so we’re mostly concerned about the start, and the aid station/timing area at the beginning and end of the loop. If we can all keep our grubby hands off the goodies at the aid station and each other we should be able to keep risks reasonable.

First things first (or six paragraphs in): If you are showing any signs of Coronavirus then stay home. Let us know and we will happily defer your entry to next year or give you a refund of the race fee (minus Ultrasignup’s fee, unfortunately) and we’ll buy you a puppy. (Puppy not guaranteed.) Seriously. If you’re sick or suspect you may be getting sick, stay home and take care of yourself. We want you to get loopy with us for many years to come. This really is serious, and Seattle is ground zero. Do not let our irreverent prose style fool you into thinking otherwise. But life does go on, so we’re trying to strike a compromise.

The official start time and end time remain the same: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are concerned with being in a crowd at the start and are not going to spend all 12 hours with us, you are welcome to start at a later hour. You won’t be eligible for the “overall weiner” (overall winner) trophy, but our trophies aren’t all that exciting.

We will be doing our best to mitigate possible contamination at the aid station. To that end:

* We will have two hand-washing stations and as much hand sanitizer as we can loot. (Sanitizer is out of stock everywhere right now.) If you’re stopping for aid we recommend you use them.
* Please let the volunteers at the aid station assist you. Limiting the number of grubby hands that touch the supplies is critical.
* If filling a bottle, remove the lid of your water bottle and hold the bottle for volunteers to fill at aid stations from pitchers. Do not hand them your bottle. This mitigates transmission from runners touching water spigots or volunteers touching bottles.
* We will try to have as many individually-packaged snacks as possible, but you might have to ask a volunteer to hand them to you (to keep people from spreading germs to the surface of wrappers as they paw through the selection).
* Any bulk foods (think M&Ms) will be poured into individual portion cups. Take the whole cup, and toss any leftovers.
* Don’t put anything you’ve touched back on the table. If you do, we’ll be forced to set fire to the entire aid station. (Or at least wipe everything down with bleach more frequently than we already will be doing.)
* There will be a drop bag area. If you have any concerns about transmission of the virus you can plan to bring your own snacks in your pack or drop bag.
* Parents: supervise your children near any communal spaces, particularly at the food table. (Tiny grubby hands that get near the food table will be dipped in bleach or fed to the geese that wander around the lake.)
* Stay home if you are sick. We will defer or refund your registration and raise a glass in your honor afterward.
* Be very mindful of touching your face and always wash or sanitize your hands after using the bathroom, sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose, eating, or touching your face.
* No farmer blows. No high-fives.

And a final safety plea:
* Don’t run in the road. It would be ironic to spend all day mitigating a virus only to be hit by a car.

Give a shout if you have any questions. We might not have answers, but we’ll try to get through this together.

Letter we sent out yesterday:

Hello Dizzy Dazers! We’re looking forward to hosting all of you at the 11th Dizzy Daze this coming Saturday. Here is some pertinent info:

First, the road: DON’T RUN ON IT! If we see you do so, we’ll disqualify you. Besides, we don't want to spend all day scraping you out of the grill of a car.

Second, DO NOT BRING VALUABLES. Three cars were broken into in 2017, despite us being right next to the parking lot.

Time/location:
Both the 5-hour and 12-hour will start at 7 a.m. at the north end of Green Lake near the Bathhouse Theater, 7358 West Green Lake Dr. N., Seattle, WA 98115. Parking is available in the adjacent lot, as well as on the street. Check-in for both races starts at 6 a.m. (If you get there before the race directors, please leave the parking spots closest to the grassy section open!). The 5-hour ends at noon, and the 12-hour at 7 p.m.

Timing:
Once again we are using chip timing by NW Endurance Events! That said, YOU MUST WEAR YOUR BIB ON THE FRONT as we’ll still be recording numbers on the big boards. If you fold up your bib, make sure you do NOT fold the chip. If you're going to put it on a leg, put it on the left leg.

Course/Race format:
You will be running the 3.2-mile outside loop. You will complete as many loops as you can within your race timeframe. You don’t have to run the entire 5 or 12 hours, but let the timers know when you are done. Note: we only count full laps! (More info on “counting” this race for Half Fanatics/Marathon Maniacs below).

Kibble:
Your hosts are ultrarunners of middling skill but extensive experience. We love ultras for the food, and that's what we'll have for you. Expect the usual Gatorade and water, fruit and sugary snacks, but also pancakes, bacon (MMMMM… bacon), bean & avocado wraps and fresh pizzas right out of our portable oven. If this is your first ultra it'll seem weird, but our intent is to corrupt you forever and turn you toward the Ultra Side.

Now, the weather:
Your guess is as good as mine, but I don't think we'll set any records. It'll likely be cool and dewy in the morning, rainy at some point and sunny at some point. Your mom called and said bring a coat just in case. We'll have a tarp for drop bags; we can cover the bags with the tarp, but we still recommend something rain-compatible like a cooler or a dry sack. While the tarp will be right next to the aid station, we can not completely guarantee their safety. So please, no valuables!

Awards, yes, AWARDS!
We’ve upped our game this year and will be handing out awards: overall male/female for both the 5-hour and 12-hour, as well as some “special” awards. These will be handed out immediately after the respective races.

Will this “count?”
As far as the race is concerned, as long as you run one 3.2-mile loop, you’ll be listed in the results. However, we know some (okay, many) of you want the race to count toward either Half Fanatics or Marathon Maniacs stats. We get ya, and actually started the 5-hour so that the Fanatics can join in on the fun. That said, we don’t make it easy :) Here are the deets:

5-hour:
If you’re looking for Fanatics stats, then you’ll have to run 5 laps, for a total of 16 miles (4 laps will only get ya 12.8 miles). For Maniacs stats, you’ll have to run 9 laps, for a total of 28.8 miles. Both must be run within the 5-hour timeframe (7 a.m. to noon).

12-hour:
Half Fanatics — you’re s**t outta luck and this race doesn’t count for you. Maniacs — you must run 10 laps, or 32 miles.

Here’s a handy distance chart.

See you on Saturday!
- Your intrepid race directors at Two Cats Running.

Results are up!

2018 was the Women's March edition of Dizzy Daze. A 31-week pregnant participant finished 32 miles and our overall winner logged 67.2 miles in 11:48:17 even while stopping midrace to nurse her daughter.

Hats off to the ladies!

Thanks to everyone who helped out this year, especially Leslie, Jill, Rich, and all those who tried to get the plate number and description of the mountebanks who kept breaking into cars. It was a weird year.

Your race directors collapsed in a heap after the race and woke up a couple of days later, but (way too late) semi-accurate results are up on Ultrasignup and on the website.

SemiKindaFinal Results for 2017. Our accounting firm of Jasper and Luna (our cats) are currently purring atop the timing sheets, which we assume means they are checking them over. When they finish with their appraisal we will post final results.

Thanks to everyone who ran, volunteered, cheered, ate pizza, and chased after car prowlers today. It was, as always, very weird.
