⭐ It's time again for our Spotlight Series of master classes! For this series, we welcome youth ages 12+ and adult dancers with intermediate experience to learn from guest artists sharing their artistry and expertise.

👉 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗨𝗣: 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗼 𝗗𝗼𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝘀! Join us on Saturday, November 7, from 1:30-3:30pm, for this incredible introduction to Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form with African roots and a rich history connected to the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants in Brazil. It represents resilience and resistance to oppression, as well as the preservation of African cultural traditions. Capoeira is practiced in a circle, called the roda, combining physical expression with live music.

🎶 In this class, dancers will be introduced to the elements of Capoeira through dance, music, history, and philosophy. You'll learn basic movements and explore the physical dialogue that develops between participants. Learn basic rhythms, play Capoeira instruments, and learn how to sing songs in Brazilian Portuguese!

🎨 𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧: Known to students as Mestre Silvinho, Silvio Dos Reis is Artistic Director at Union Cultural Center and a master-level teacher of Capoeira Angola. He began practicing Capoeira in his hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1986, and after relocating to Seattle in 2004, he established the International Capoeira Angola Foundation’s local branch. Beyond ongoing classes at Union Cultural Center, he organizes international conferences and summer camps and teaches courses at the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, and Western Washington University. With over 30 years of experience, he leads ICAF Seattle and supports Capoeira study groups across the Pacific Northwest. We are thrilled to have him at Creative Dance Center!

⭐ Our commitment to arts education continues this week at the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) 2026 National Conference in Albuquerque! Our own fearless Director, Terry Goetz, will be presenting two Brain-Compatible Dance Education-guided sessions this weekend:

🩰 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 & 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲
(Saturday, 9/26, 8:00–9:10am)
This experiential session explores how the BrainDance can serve as a holistic, developmentally-informed foundation for ballet training. Participants will move through a sample ballet class that integrates the BrainDance as an embodied warm-up, preparing the body and brain for a student-centered approach to technique. The session will also use the BrainDance as a jumping-off point for guided improvisation and collaborative dance-making, demonstrating how these patterns can enrich creative process and artistic expression. You will leave with practical strategies for incorporating the BrainDance as a healthy and efficient warm-up, using BrainDance-based cueing to clarify technique, and creating ballet classes that balance technical development with expressivity and a sense of belonging!

How can poetry take flight in the preschool dance class? Inspired by Misty Copeland’s Firebird, participants will experience a Brain-Compatible Dance Education (BCDE) model that layers story, sensation, and structure within a clear five-part lesson plan. Participants will explore how children’s literature, ballet heritage, and dance concepts can come together to create an artistically rich, inclusive preschool class. You will also leave with renewed confidence in how simple, creative structures can support deep learning and joyful engagement in young dancers!

It's National Arts in Education Week! 🎨

At Creative Dance Center, we know that the arts are essential to our lives. Arts education isn’t a luxury, it’s a proven driver of student achievement, creativity, and even workforce readiness. But right now, that foundation is under threat. The federal funding streams that support arts education in schools nationwide are facing cuts. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), a critical funder of arts programs across the country, is in danger of being eliminated. Access to arts degrees, including at HBCUs, is increasingly under pressure, threatening pathways into the creative economy for the next generation of artists and leaders. 🎭

When we lose these investments, we lose more than programs—we lose opportunity, culture, and community. This week, we’re calling on Congress to fully fund arts education's five federal funding streams, maintain funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and protect access to the arts for every student in every community, from preK-12 through higher education. 🙌

🎉 We have SO MUCH to celebrate! As we enter fall, we want to share what we've been up to here at CDC, in the Seattle community, and beyond!

Anne Green Gilbert, CDC Founder and creator of Brain-Compatible Dance Education, retired from teaching the Summer Dance Institute for Teachers this summer. She capped off 31 years at the helm of SDIT by leading this year's cohort of 43 students from around the world with her co-teacher, Dionne Kamara. While SDIT will continue on, we are so grateful to Anne for pioneering this powerful, impactful program!

CDC Director and beloved teacher Terry Goetz just finished her 25th year at CDC! In 1997, Terry brought her toddler to one of Anne's classes and the rest is history. Deeply inspired by Anne and the mission of CDC, Terry went on to attend SDIT five times and started teaching here in 2000. Terry specializes in movement in the early years, sharing how creative dance supports brain development, language growth, confidence, and social-emotional connection. Dance with Terry this Fall!

Kaleidoscope had a blast this past June at the daCi USA National Gathering in Towson, MD! The company enjoyed a wonderful week of connecting, learning, and performing with young dancers from across the country. We love being part of daCi, an amazing organization that brings together young dancers from all over the world. Next summer we travel to Malaysia for the 2027 daCi International Conference!

This was our third summer supporting Hunger Intervention Program (HIP)! HIP provides free meals during the summer to King County families who rely on free and reduced lunches during the school year. As part of their Summer Eats program, they provide lunch and activities at several North Seattle locations. Thank you to HIP for the work you do and to the creative, inspiring children who danced with us. And thank you to our teachers, Olivia Evans and Ruby A. Moore, for your wonderful work in the community this summer!

The celebration isn't over yet—get ready to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Creative Dance Center! It's going to be another banner year!

🎭 Move, create, imagine, and play! Dive into dance and drama through movement, storytelling, and dramatic adventures as students collaboratively explore imagined worlds and transform into characters. Along the way, they will build dance and theater skills, confidence, collaboration, and creative problem-solving, all while bringing their own ideas to life through BrainDance and movement exploration.

☀️ We're bummed that summer is almost over, but we're revved up for our FINAL WEEK of camps!! We've got a variety of options for everyone ages 4-13!

NEXT WEEK (August 17-21):

🎤 We invite campers ages 10-13 to join fan-favorite 𝗞𝗣𝗼𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 (9:30am - 12:30pm) and 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗨𝗽! 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 (1:00-4:00pm) so they can harness the power of their voices!

🎨 For kiddos ages 4-5, our morning-only 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 camp (9:30am - 12:30pm) blends kinesthetic and visual/spatial learning as young dancers discover a new artist each day and explore their unique style through movement, music, and creating their own artwork!

👟 And for our 6-to-9-year-olds, our afternoon-only 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗛𝗼𝗽 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘃𝗲 camp (1:00-4:00pm) introduces foundational dance concepts that build strong, confident dancers—develop performance skills and discover the history and cultural roots of Hip Hop!
