Some journeys don't wait for you to feel ready. They just call, and you go.
I did the Kailash Parikrama in July 2024 — an oxygen scare that dropped to 68%, a night I was too afraid to close my eyes, and a lot of surrender I didn't see coming. Full story in the carousel.
Here's what I'd actually tell anyone considering this pilgrimage -
You don't need to be an athlete. I didn't train for months — daily movement (10K steps + strength training) mattered more than any training block would have.
Altitude doesn't care about your fitness level. Get your oxygen checked regularly, and don't ignore what your body is telling you.
If you're an Indian passport holder, book early. Group permits for Tibet fill up fast, especially in significant years.
Pack for every extreme. Sun, wind, and snow can all show up in the same day.
Go with an operator who has a real medical team on the ground. This part is non-negotiable. And always listen to your body and the medical team. What worked for me might not work for you. Acute Mountain Sickness is real and fatal. Faith is an essential part of the journey, but it should always go hand in hand with listening to your body and the advice of the medical team and guides.
Leave room for surrender. No itinerary prepares you for what the mountain actually teaches you.
If you've ever felt pulled toward this pilgrimage and want the exact itinerary and operator I used — comment "SHIVA" and I'll send it to you. 🕉️
