Nasir: Almost! Where is my lifejacket? Mommy where is it?

Me: It’s in the trunk son. I’ll get it for you.

I love our conversations together. It makes me very proud to know he is listening and learning from me. He knew that he needed a lifejacket on to go near the water. And when he asked me for it….my heart skipped because I know my baby is learning what every child his age deserves to learn, that water is beautiful and water is dangerous. Putting on a lifejacket can be as normalized as putting on a seatbelt. When my son was younger, I would let him walk around the house in his lifejacket just to get comfortable with the idea of it. He will wear one for the rest of his life and so will I. 🛟🦺

What would you do if you were in this situation?

I don’t know who needs to hear this but there is healing in the water!

I often get asked as a Coach about what drives me to teach swimming. The truth is that water heals my spirit, mind, and body.

Being in, near, or around water is a super power that I use to regulate my emotions and stimulate my body to keep going.

For my birthday, I took my son to the water so that he could soak up the joy that I feel from being in this space.

Swimming is freedom and I want every person to be free.

Doing my favorite thing with my favorite person.

I don’t like swimming through trenches.

It’s hard and I know I’m going to get tired.

Swimming until it hurts.

I can’t stop swimming because I am a fighter.

A fighter would never let the deep win because she knows that the light is closer than any of us could imagine.

So I just keep swimming.

I promise it is going to be worth it.

I am going to swim like my life depends on it.
