Let us know you’re coming? Register at centerforbicyclerepair.com/learnrepairs or via link in bio.

Students use the guide to prepare for the shop’s proficiency exam, which licenses a mechanic to work with .

Space limited to 4 students per Shop Hour session. Newsletter subscribers will hear about new dates first: Substack.com/

If you have taken a class in the shop, I am grateful to you. The source material for the Professional Guide are the hundreds of face to face interactions we’ve had in classes. There wouldn’t be any ink on the page if we didn’t all have the same grease on our hands. If you’re a former student, ask about discounts.

Tasteless

Last Friday, a Seattle Times columnist (Danny Westneat) broke no new ground in a piece that called Little Saigon “Seattle’s Drug Capital”.

Show how little you care by grabbing some tasteless merch. Printing cotton bags (for holding your drugs in) or on tees (for wearing when you use drugs).

If you want a tee printed, gather your courage and drop off one (must be 100% cotton) on Sunday, 10-4, at the shop, 1019 S Jackson St.

You can also join the Sunday Intro class from 1-3!

Intro class, merch, must drugs on the street: pay what you can, pay what you want.

Please share: if you’re a federal worker on furlough or working for no pay, I’ll fix your bike for free.

You can also take an intro class on Sunday for free, and I can fit two of you into an advanced class rotation.

On Wednesday, 5/21 from 6-8pm, we are so excited to have Dr. Benjamin Rutz in the shop for an evening devoted to carbon fiber.

Dr. Rutz is a 15 year veteran in the carbon fiber industry. Holding a PhD in Chemical Engineering from UW, where he’s also taught, we’ve asked him to bring his wealth of knowledge and experience to help you understand where carbon fiber comes from, why it’s so strong and what can be done to repair it.

Hope to see you on 5/21!

Documenting the repair of the damaged, carbon fiber drive side seat stay of a 2017 BMC Teammachine SLR01.

Photos show removal of damaged (delaminated) carbon fiber, filling the resulting cavity with two-part closed cell expanding foam, sculpting foam and preparation of the repair site for wet layup of 5 layers unidirectional carbon fiber (respecting orientation of parent carbon fiber material) plus 1 layer of woven carbon fiber to act as a sanding layer.

First impressions: repair was not as flush or uniform as I hope, but seems strong as bone.

Stay tuned for the BMC reassembly and test.

The creative forces have beautifully embellished the shop’s window.

Back in June, the building housing the supermarket was engulfed in flames and eventually torn down (Viet Wah was a tenant and had moved out prior to the fire).

Two lions sat at the entrance to the store and their quiet presence was an anchor. They were removed during demolition.

Katya has brought them back with the shop’s new attraction. It feels so good, it was done so well and the shop is even more welcoming and enmeshed in the Little Saigon neighborhood because of Katya’s work.

Happy end of 2024 everyone, thanks for being part of the shop and part of Little Saigon. See you next year ❤️
