The Khazar Khaganate
The Khazar Empire was a powerful medieval state that existed roughly 650–969 CE in the region between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. It controlled key trade routes linking Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, acting as a bridge between civilizations.
Who were the Khazars?
The Khazars were a Turkic steppe people who built a multi-ethnic empire. Their society included Turkic tribes, Slavs, Iranians, Jews, Christians, and Muslims. They were known more for trade and diplomacy than constant conquest.
They acted as a buffer state between:
the expanding Islamic Caliphates to the south
the Christian Byzantine Empire
emerging Slavic and steppe powers to the north
This balancing act kept the region relatively stable for centuries.
The famous conversion
The Khazar ruling elite is historically known for adopting Judaism around the 8th–9th century. This is one of the rare cases where a ruling class chose Judaism as a state religion. Scholars still debate:
how widespread the conversion was among common people
whether it was political neutrality between Christianity and Islam
or a genuine religious shift
Economy and power
Khazaria became wealthy by controlling Silk Road trade:
fur trade from northern forests
slaves and metal goods
transit taxes on caravans
river trade routes linking Scandinavia to the Middle East
Its capital, Itil, was a cosmopolitan trade city.
Fall of the empire
In the late 10th century, the Khazars were defeated by the rising Kievan Rus'. After this, their political power disappeared, and they were absorbed into surrounding populations.
Why people still talk about them
The Khazars are often mentioned in:
debates about Jewish diaspora history
Eurasian steppe empires
conspiracy theories (many inaccurate)
early Russian and Eastern European history
Modern historians treat them as a real but limited medieval empire, not a hidden puppet civilization. 03/28/2026
