THE SWORD HAS MORE TO TEACH YOU THAN SWORDSMANSHIP.
Most people look at a Japanese sword and immediately think about what they can learn to do with it.
How to hold it.
How to move with it.
How to cut.
How to defend.
Those are important skills.
But they're only part of what centuries of Japanese warriors discovered through the sword.
Because the Katana can also become a remarkably unforgiving teacher.
It can expose problems in your distance, timing and positioning.
It can reveal unnecessary movement.
It can show you when you're substituting strength for structure—or committing yourself to an action without considering what happens afterward.
And it can reveal when you're so focused on what you're trying to do that you've stopped paying attention to what your opponent is telling you.
That's why the theme for this year's Annual Fall Warrior-Protector Intensive is:
⚔️ THE HIDDEN LESSONS OF THE KATANA
This isn't simply a weekend of learning more sword techniques.
We're going to use the Katana to investigate principles involving distance, initiative, precision, commitment, movement, adaptability and strategic decision-making—and what those lessons can teach us about our Taijutsu.
Because sometimes the most important thing a weapon teaches you...
isn't about the weapon.
It's something about you.
