The armed citizen who stopped the gunman inside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has been identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco, a father whose two daughters attend the school.
According to a family member, Giamanco was heading home on his lunch break when he heard gunshots near the school and he rushed toward the gunfire.
Giamanco saw the gunman enter the school, followed him inside and fatally shot him before officers arrived.
The timeline shows just how quickly everything unfolded.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the first 911 call came in at 12:59 p.m. from someone in a vehicle reporting that a person with a long gun had fired at them multiple times. Dozens of calls followed as the gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary.
The school was placed on lockdown at 1:01 p.m. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and, within seconds, reported that the gunman was already dead.
Police say the 16-year-old Bend resident had shot his way through a locked door to enter the school. Authorities initially described the weapon only as a “long gun,” while subsequent reporting has identified it as a sh***un.
Three children and a teacher were killed. Another child and teacher were also critically injured.
Police have not identified the teenage gunman or released a motive.
Whatever additional details emerge in the investigation, one thing is already clear: an armed father ran toward a school where his own children were inside, followed an active shooter into the building and stopped him before police could get there.
There is no way to know how many more lives may have been lost if he hadn't.
Kaylub Giamanco is a hero. 🙏
