What is the difference between billet aluminum and forged aluminum AR lower?

Strength is the primary difference .

A fully formed aluminum (AL) forging shaped to the end product will be ultimately stronger than an AL billet machined to dimension.

The resulting internal stresses produced through the forging process creates a product with a grain flow structure that, during solidification, flows, wraps and solidifies in a natural nonstressed molecular state.

If you allow the molten Al material to solidify in a solid block form, you have the same molecular structure but the subsequent dimensional machining reintroduces stresses in that same base material. Stress relieving eliminates most, but not all of the inherent stresses.

A fracture in the finished base lower material of either a forged or billet lower will be a rarity in your lifetime.

The major difference you MIGHT notice is the exacting metal to metal fit due to the precision, cost driving machining process. Although you will not visually detect the resulting stresses, they will certainly be there.

The Bottom Line:

Focus on the BCG, Brl Profile, Trigger, Optics, etc. The material integrity of the lower will NOT be your primary dysfunctional concern. The lower housing is simply an empty home for all the other components which WILL reward you with MOA if you choose wisely.

Personally, I do like the feel and look of a billet lower, but this does not justify the added cost nor integrity of the product end result.

You can't go wrong, so enjoy your peace of mind with your choice of billet or forged.

This is the final opinion as perceived by a retired metallurgist, and a Viet Nam era veteran who demands 100% confidence in an AR platform.
