It is with deep sadness that the Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS announces the passing of Retired Fire Chief Bruce Smith, a 46-year devoted public servant whose leadership, vision, and dedication helped shape the Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS and the fire service throughout Hamilton County and Ohio.
Chief Smith began his fire service career on March 18, 1969, when he joined the Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department. In September 1975, he became the first full-time Assistant Fire Chief of the Colerain Township Fire Department. Following the retirement of Chief Corky Snyder, Chief Smith was promoted to Fire Chief in 1987, a position he held with distinction for over 27 years.
During his tenure, Chief Smith championed numerous advancements that improved firefighter safety and emergency response. He was instrumental in implementing the Incident Command System within the department, establishing clear command procedures that enhanced safety, reduced freelancing on emergency scenes, and ultimately became the standard throughout Hamilton County. He also helped implement firefighter accountability systems to better track personnel during emergency incidents.
Chief Smith's commitment to providing the highest level of service to the community extended beyond fire suppression. In 1989, under his leadership, Colerain Township Fire Department introduced paramedic services, significantly expanding advanced emergency medical care for township residents.
A visionary leader, Chief Smith led the effort to construct a new fire station in the northeast portion of Colerain Township, improving response times and public safety. Station 109, located on West Kemper Road near Pippin Road, opened in 2004. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions and 46 years of dedicated service, Station 109 was officially named in honor of Chief Smith in October 2015.
Chief Smith was also committed to professional excellence and lifelong learning. From 1985 to 1987, he attended the prestigious Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy, becoming the first member of the department to complete the rigorous three-year course. Beyond Colerain Township, he played an active role in advancing the fire and EMS profession, serving as President of the Hamilton County Fire Chiefs Association and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.
Chief Smith leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, innovation, and dedication to the safety and well-being of both firefighters and the community he faithfully served. His impact will continue to be felt for generations, and he will be remembered with gratitude, admiration, and respect by all who had the privilege to know and serve alongside him.
