🌲 National Public Lands Day — September 26 🌲
Join Black Mountain Nordic for our annual Volunteer Trail Day on Saturday, September 26, from 9:00 AM–12:30 PM at Cutler Hill!
We’re putting the finishing touches on the Sageway Loop and the west side of Mutt Meadow. Earlier this summer, Curt and Nick tackled some major work with a mini excavator, cutting down the high side of the trail and moving countless boulders. Now we need your help to finish the job! 💪
Our goal for the day will be to smooth out the trail and move smaller rocks, helping create a better, more accessible trail for our winter recreation community. ❄️
Whether you’ve volunteered with us before or this is your first trail day, we’d love to have you join us!

Come give a little time to the trails we all enjoy! 🌲❤️

🚜❄️ Summer trail work is hard work—and this week, we made some major progress!

After three summers of work with an excavator, we have finally completed the major dirt work along the Sageway Loop! We originally cut in Sageway and Greta’s Run three summers ago, but the trail was still pretty wild during its first season of skiing. Last summer, we focused on improving the lower section, and this summer we finished the upper side.

That means the big machine work is finally done—but the project isn’t quite finished yet! There are still plenty of rocks to pick up, dirt to move, and areas to rake and smooth. The remaining work will all be done by hand. If you’d like to help us put the finishing touches on Sageway, reach out—we’d love the extra hands!

We also had enough time to make significant progress on the west side of Mutt Meadow, continuing work that began last fall. The Bighorn National Forest brought in their rock blasters last year to address some particularly problematic rocks, and this week we were able to continue the work with the excavator—moving additional rocks and leveling sections of trail that were off-camber.

There’s still some hand work to do there as well, including moving dirt and cleaning up smaller rocks, but the trail is already taking shape!

And a BIG shout-out to Curt Schwamb, who volunteered well over 40 hours this week as our machine operator. We are incredibly grateful for the time, skill, and hard work he gives to help improve our trails. 👏

Our trails are built and maintained by a community of people who care deeply about winter recreation in the Bighorn Mountains. Every hour of volunteer time makes a difference—and every bit of summer work helps create better skiing when the snow finally returns. 🌲❄️🎿

Only 10 days until WyoGives! 🎉❄️

The countdown is on, and we love getting to share why Black Mountain Nordic is so much more than groomed trails.

Every ski lesson, every family adventure, every mile of trail we groom is possible because of this incredible community.

On July 15, you have the chance to help keep those experiences accessible for everyone. Whether you’ve skied our trails, volunteered, donated, or simply believe that kids and families deserve opportunities to get outside, you’re part of this story.

Take a few minutes to watch Nick’s message, and mark your calendar for WyoGives on July 15! Together, we can make this our biggest year yet.

Winter has a way of bringing people together. ❤️❄️

One of my favorite parts of our mission at Black Mountain Nordic is seeing kids, families, homeschool groups, and first-time skiers discover the joy of being outside together. Every smile, every new skill, and every shared adventure is made possible because of the generosity of our community.

This July 15, your gift during WyoGives helps us provide free winter programs, loan equipment, and create opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature and each other.

Thank you for believing in our mission and helping us make winter accessible for everyone. đź’™

⚠️ Trail Closure Notice – Sibley Nordic Trails ⚠️

Due to an active timber sale south of Sibley Lake, a small section of the Sibley Nordic Ski Trail system is temporarily closed to public entry. This includes a portion of the trails many of us enjoy for summer hiking and mountain biking.

We understand this closure may be frustrating, especially during the summer season, but your safety is the top priority. Active logging operations involve large, mechanized equipment, and operators may not be able to see people on the ground.

Please respect all closure signs and do not enter active timber sale areas. Even outside of designated closures, if warning signs are posted, stay clear of the area. And please direct all questions to the Bighorn National Forest Service.

It’s also worth remembering that the trails we enjoy today exist because of past timber harvests. Logging has played an important role in creating many of the routes that now serve as our Nordic ski, hiking, and biking trails. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as this work continues to support the long-term health and management of our forest. 🌲

Thank you for helping keep our community and forestry crews safe. ♥️
