Today our Centennial spotlight series continues with Guy Christensen! Guy served as Greater Joliet Area YMCA Board Chair from 2022-2023 and currently serves on the Morris Hospital YMCA Advisory Council. From the early stages of the Morris Hospital YMCA capital campaign, to a milestone groundbreaking, and finally the historic day it opened its doors, Guy played an integral part in the construction of Grundy County’s first full-service YMCA. Guy says he has witnessed firsthand the strength of the YMCA community, and looks forward to its continued success at it enters the next century of service.

“The Y community feels like one large family to me. Everyone associated with the Y is so dedicated to making the YMCA a welcoming place, and that dedication is what brings new members to Y facilities and keeps the existing members coming back enthusiastically!”

Today, we were proud to reveal our new history wall to our Board of Directors!

The wall highlights major milestones from the Greater Joliet Area YMCA’s 100-year history, giving us a chance to look back at where we’ve been, celebrate how far we’ve come and recognize all the wins along the way.

We remain deeply grateful to the members, employees, volunteers, donors and community partners whose dedication to the Y’s mission and the residents of Will and Grundy Counties made this historic milestone possible. As we begin our second century of service, we remain guided by our mission, inspired by our history, and committed to strengthening our community and transforming lives for generations to come!

The YMCA’s Holiday Card Design Contest is back! Open to Y Members, ages 6-12, the contest is the perfect opportunity for kids to let their artistic talents shine and help spread a little cheer this upcoming holiday season.

Here’s how to enter:

1. Download an entry form and print it out. Entry forms are also available at the Y’s Front Desk.

2. Grab some crayons, markers and colored pencils and draw a picture that depicts your favorite things about the holidays and the winter season. From snowmen to Christmas trees, to candy canes and snowflakes, we can’t wait to see your original designs!

3. Complete the entry form and drop it off at the Y.

We will select our three favorite designs—one from each age group—to be featured on the Y’s holiday card. The deadline to enter is 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 5. Visit our blog to download an entry form today: https://bit.ly/4Av2prP

Yesterday, we had the honor of celebrating our President & CEO, Katy Leclair, at the 39th ATHENA Luncheon, where she was recognized as the 2026 ATHENA Award recipient!

Katy leads with a commitment to our community and strives to create opportunities for others to grow and thrive. Her leadership has helped the Greater Joliet Area YMCA expand its reach, strengthen its impact, and serve more people throughout Will and Grundy counties.

It was a special day surrounded by community leaders, colleagues, family, and friends who came together to celebrate Katy and the impact of her leadership. We’re grateful to everyone who attended in support and proud to share a few moments from the celebration!

Breaking ground and building dreams! The YMCA was excited to host the groundbreaking ceremony for the future Morris Hospital YMCA on May 31, 2023. The new Morris Hospital YMCA was under construction for about a year and a half before opening its doors to the community on December 16, 2024.

This 60,000-square-foot facility features an eight-lane lap pool, wellness center, gymnasium, fitness and cycling studios, youth play spaces, community rooms, outdoor amenities, and an onsite Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers clinic.

The YMCA and Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers announced a partnership to enhance the health and Wellness of Grundy County residents in 2014.

By 2018, the YMCA launched the Community Grows Here Capital Campaign to raise $18 million to build a new full-facility YMCA to serve the Grundy County community. In August 2019, the YMCA announced leadership-level contributions from the City of Morris and Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. The Y announced that the future facility will be named the Morris Hospital YMCA.

In December of 2008, the Morris Community YMCA was officially chartered by the YMCA of the USA as a new branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA.

Longtime Morris Resident and YMCA board member Ron Evenson, and his farming partner, Mark Jorstad, established the first permanent YMCA footprint in the City of Morris in 2010 with a generous donation of a 15-acre parcel of land on U.S. Route 6.
