Tournament Baseball League for youth involved in Shreveport Little League. FAQs

1.) What Is STEAM? How much does it cost to register? Are evaluations tryouts?

STEAM is a tournament baseball league for youth involved in Shreveport Little League (SLL). STEAM allows your player to be exposed to higher level coaching and tournaments without the time commitment /cost other travel teams may require.

2. ) Do I have to play Shreveport Little League to play STEAM? Yes, but STEAM practices and tournaments will not overlap/interfere with your SLL team practices a

nd games.

3.) Initial STEAM Evaluations are $20 (nonrefundable). This cost will be applied to your registration fee once your player registers for STEAM. Registration is $800 (if paying cash or check) or $850 (if paid through a payment plan).

4.) What do Registration fees cover? Registration covers the cost of Fungoman training, individual/group instruction, and uniforms (includes baseball cap and jersey).

5.) What does registration NOT cover? Registration does not cover tournament fees. Tournament fees will cover the cost of the team to be in entered into the tournament as well as umpire fees. These fees are determined by the hosts of the tournaments. This fee amount is not available to us at this time and will be collected the week leading up to the tournament. Cost generally ranges from 40-60$/player/tournament.

6.) How many times a week does STEAM practice? Prior to the start of tournaments, STEAM generally practices twice a week. Once tournaments begin, this will change to one time per week. This is subject to change based on players’ skill development.

7.) How is STEAM different from other travel teams? Most travel teams participate in 8-10 tournaments a season. STEAM participates in 4-5 tournaments, depending if the tournaments make (if the tournament has enough teams sign up to host a tournament). Also, STEAM tournaments are all within about an hour driving distance from Shreveport/Bossier.

8.) Evaluations ARE NOT tryouts. However, it will give parents, coaches and players a good assessment of player skill level at the time of evaluations. It allows participants (and their parents) to determine if STEAM is the correct program for them. In addition, for players, who register for STEAM, there will be an end-of-season evaluation to assess growth of play over the STEAM season.

9.) When does STEAM begin and end? Practices to begin in February and season to end mid-May.

SLL and STEAM Families,

STEAM is back and better than ever! If you don’t already know, STEAM is designed to enhance the Shreveport Little League experience for players interested in extra development and possible tournament play. Entering our third season, STEAM continues to evolve to better serve the needs of our young baseball players and their families. During the o? season, time was spent assessing the aspects of STEAM we have all grown to love and ways to make improvements. As a result, we are excited to introduce STEAM Academy!

STEAM Academy is a 6-week program starting December 11, 2022, that is designed to increase the technical skills for our young players through a series of coaching clinics that will be tailored to meet the needs of each age group. Players will be divided into their respective age groups, which ranges from 8u-13u. Each practice will consist of two-hour sessions at Acro Sports on Sunday afternoons.

One difference with STEAM Academy is that anyone is invited to participate as this is open to all young baseball players. The fee for STEAM Academy is $315 for 8u and $350 for 9u-13u (which also includes a practice jersey and hat).

At the end of STEAM Academy, one tournament team will be formed/selected for each age group. Additional fees will be assessed for players participating on the STEAM tournament teams. Though your player does not need to be signed up for Shreveport Little League for STEAM Academy, they WILL need to sign up for SLL to participate in STEAM tournaments.

The tournament teams will play in similar tournaments as last year, staying within a 1.5 hour distance from Shreveport. The STEAM tournament players will be chosen from STEAM Academy and assigned a dedicated coach for the season. These coaches will be present during STEAM Academy practices, not only to lead each practice session but also to build relationships with the players prior to tournament season.

STEAM sighting:

Nate Hancock and his STEAM buddies (Chandler Frierson, Tucker Smith, Chayse Frierson) got to watch the Gents’ batting practice prior to their home game and were able to go out on the field during the National Anthem. Looks like fun!
