Think about this quote for a minute. The man of principle never forgets what he is, because of what others are. If you are a man or woman of principle, you live your life, your way, according to your principles and beliefs, no matter how anyone else lives. You don't use the words or actions of others to justify putting your principles on a shelf or lowering your standards. You must remain true to yourself, no matter how other people behave or choose to live their lives.

I see many in the martial arts world who forget this important truth. They see so-called celebrity martial artists going to fake martial arts hall of fame events and accepting "pay-per-play" trophies and fake championship belts, and then think it is somehow okay for them to set their principles aside and buy themselves a "hall of fame" trophy as well. Never lower your standards because others are willing to lower theirs!

Let's look at a fairly straight forward comparison. Yesterday, the NFL released 15 names of players who are being CONSIDERED for the Pro Football Hall of Fame - 15 possible names! This month at the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame run by Alan Goldberg, hundreds of martial artists will buy themselves a so-called martial art hall of fame trophy - HUNDREDS! There will be dozens of "Grandmasters of the Year," not one, but dozens. In fact, there will be dozens, if not hundreds, of "winners" in every single catagory!

Compare that to a REAL hall of fame such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame which is only considering 15 men, of which only a handful will actually be inducted. Can you not see that one of these is a REAL hall of fame and the other is a money-making business which depends on the overblown egos of the martial arts world?

This is a great example of what Gracian meant by, "The man of principle never forgets what he is, because of what others are." These martial artists must know that this is not a legitimate martial arts hall of fame, but they shell out $260 to be "honored" with a so-called "hall of fame" trophy anyway. They have allowed their egos to override their honor and integrity!

Men and women of principle do not lower their standards to satisfy their ego. They do not need fake hall of fame trophies or fake championship belts to make them feel good about themselves. Men and women of honor feel good about themselves because they live by their principles and high standards. They know that if they are paying to be honored, that is truly not an honor, but simply buying themselves a cheap trophy. And, if we get right down to it, it is dishonest!

Where is the honor in buying yourself a trophy and then claiming to be a martial arts hall of fame inductee? You were not inducted; you simply bought a product and paid for your name to be listed along with hundreds and hundreds of others. True martial artists should have more integrity than that!
