Our story: Built by Community. For more than three decades, The Center has grown alongside Cheyenne County. The story of the Cheyenne County Community Center isn’t simply the story of a building. It’s the story of a community choosing, generation after generation, to invest in its people. The Cheyenne County Community Center Foundation was established on Aug. 8, 1988. A capital campaign began the following year, raising $1.7 million to turn an idea into something real. In March 1992, the first Cheyenne County Community Center opened its doors. From the beginning, The Center was dedicated to serving the health, wellness, recreational and social needs of Cheyenne County and the surrounding area. But those needs have never stood still. Neither has The Center. When local childcare needs changed in 2003, The Center reopened daycare services and continued expanding them in the years that followed. That same year, a survey found that Sidney youth felt they didn’t have a safe place to gather and socialize. The Center listened. Plans began for an expansion that eventually created new spaces for kids to use computers, play games, watch television and, most importantly, spend time together. As the community changed, those spaces changed again. That same willingness to listen and respond has continued into a new generation. In 2022, The Center began another long-term expansion effort focused on health and wellness, youth sports, early childhood learning and senior activities. The Training Room opened in February 2024, providing an 8,000-square-foot, 24-hour fitness facility. In March 2025, another expansion increased childcare capacity while creating new space for pre-teens and teenagers. For more than three decades, that’s what The Center has done. And behind every building, expansion and program are people. Donors who believed in an idea. Volunteers who gave their time. Coaches who taught more than a sport. Employees who cared for children and welcomed members. Board members who accepted the responsibility of stewardship. Businesses and community partners who invested in something larger than themselves. Parents who trusted us with their kids. And generations of Cheyenne County residents who walked through our doors. That’s why The Center is more than a facility. They can begin in childcare. Play their first sport. Find a place to spend time with friends. Discover fitness and wellness. Become an employee, coach or volunteer. Raise a family of their own. And someday, they may walk through our doors as a grandparent, still finding opportunities to stay active, connected and part of their community. Different ages. Different needs. Different reasons for coming through our doors. Today, we have been entrusted with what generations before us built. Our responsibility isn’t simply to preserve it. It’s to make it stronger. We are strengthening our organization, investing in our people, modernizing our operations, listening to our community and preparing The Center for its next chapter. Because someday, another generation will inherit what we leave behind. For the child playing their first basketball game. For the teenager looking for somewhere to belong. For the parent balancing work and family. For the adult working toward better health. For the senior who wants to remain active and connected. And for the kids who haven’t even walked through our doors yet. More than three decades after The Center first opened, we’re still building. Not simply buildings. We’re building people. We’re building relationships. We’re building opportunities. We’re building community. Someone built The Center for us. Now it’s our turn to build it for them.
