TODAY IN HISTORY – OCTOBER 16, 1859

Abolitionist John Brown and 21 men launched a raid on the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), hoping to seize weapons and spark an uprising to liberate enslaved people. Although Brown's group initially captured the arsenal, local militia and armed citizens quickly surrounded them. On October 18, U.S. Marines under the command of Colonel Robert E. Lee stormed the building, capturing Brown and ending the raid. Brown was convicted and executed on December 2, 1859. Though his mission failed, Brown's unwavering faith, extraordinary courage, and determination to liberate the oppressed left a lasting mark on American history. Driven by his true belief that slavery was a moral evil, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for the freedom of others. His actions intensified the growing divisions over slavery that would ultimately erupt into the American Civil War just 18 months later. Before his ex*****on, Brown left behind a chilling prediction of the conflict to come:
