What if pulling away isn’t enough?

Part of effective self-defense is understanding how movement works together.

In this lesson, students are practicing a wrist grab counter that combines a forearm strike with a simultaneous pull-away motion. By coordinating both actions together, the technique helps loosen the grip and create an opportunity to escape.

Kenpo teaches students to use timing, leverage, and efficient movement rather than relying on strength alone.

The goal is to create an opening, regain control, and respond appropriately to the situation.

⭐ Student Spotlight ⭐

The 8-Point Blocking System is one of the first lessons students learn when they begin their martial arts journey. 🥋

While it may seem simple, these foundational movements help develop coordination, focus, body awareness, and confidence—skills that carry into every aspect of future training.

Watching students learn these fundamentals and seeing their progress over time is one of the greatest rewards of teaching.

Every black belt started with the basics.

Did you know your balance affects every technique you perform?

Balance is one of the most important foundations in martial arts. It affects your movement, power, control, and ability to react when things don't go as planned.

In today's lesson, Sensei shares a few simple tips to help develop better balance and body awareness.

Whether you're training in martial arts or simply looking to improve your overall movement and stability, strong balance is a skill that benefits everyone.

A strong foundation supports everything built upon it.

This week's instructor training focused on an important lesson from Master Ducati:

Never forget what it was like to be a beginner. 🥋

In martial arts, earning a black belt is not the end of the journey. It is a commitment to continue learning, refining, and growing.

The fundamentals that are taught to a white belt remain just as important at the black belt level. As understanding deepens, so does the appreciation for the basics—balance, movement, positioning, and learning how to use the entire body efficiently.

A true martial artist never stops being a student.

Part 2: Wrist Grab Escape 🥋

What if the grip doesn't break immediately?

In this lesson, Sensei demonstrates how simple distraction techniques can create an opportunity to escape and regain control of the situation.

Kenpo teaches students to think beyond a single response. Sometimes creating a momentary distraction is enough to break an opponent's focus, allowing you to create space and safely disengage.

Effective self-defense is not always about strength. It's about awareness, timing, and understanding how to adapt to the situation in front of you.

What if someone grabs your wrist? 🥋

In today's lesson, Sensei demonstrates a simple escape that focuses on technique rather than strength.

Every grip has a weak point. By recognizing where the thumb and fingers connect and moving toward that opening, students learn how to create space and break free from the grab.

Self-defense often begins with understanding leverage, timing, and positioning—not force.

Stay tuned for Part 2.

Why is balance so important?

A powerful kick means very little if it leaves you out of position.

Good balance allows you to stay in control of your movement, recover quickly, and adapt to your opponent's response. Without it, even a successful technique can leave you vulnerable and unable to defend yourself effectively.

In Kenpo, we train fundamentals like balance because they influence everything that comes after—movement, timing, control, and defense.

Strong technique begins with a strong foundation.

A proud day for our dojo 🥋

Congratulations to our first group of kids and juniors on earning their yellow belts. Over the last several months, we have watched them grow in confidence, focus, discipline, and determination.

Their success is not measured by the color of the belt alone, but by the effort they have put into improving themselves every time they step onto the mat.

As some of the very first students to train at our dojo, they have helped build the foundation of the community we are creating. We are proud of their progress, grateful to be part of their journey, and excited to watch them continue to grow.

The journey continues.

One technique. Many possibilities. 🥋

During instructor training, we explored how a previously learned defense technique can be adapted and applied in different ways depending on the situation.

This is one of the defining qualities of Kenpo. Students learn principles, concepts, and fundamentals that can be adjusted to fit the individual and the circumstances they face.

There is rarely only one answer. Training is not about fitting people into a technique. It is about understanding the principles well enough to make the technique work for the individual.

The beauty of Kempo lies in its adaptability.

Kenpo Karate is built on adaptability.

While practicing front and back kicks, students learn that there is rarely only one way to respond or defend. Techniques evolve, adjust, and adapt depending on the situation and the individual applying them.

That is one of the strengths of Kenpo—training students to move with awareness, fluidity, and understanding rather than rigid memorization.

No matter the age, experience, or skill level, training can be adapted to help every student continue growing.
