Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Sioux Falls

A Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center® under Gracie University We are a homeschool family in Sioux Falls, SD.

Our mission is to equip people to confidently defend themselves. Mitch completed instructor training in June 2022 and will be officially certified in January 2023. We hope to start offering group classes soon after, but until then we are looking for several dedicated families or individuals to teach private lessons to in our home. We teach children anti-bullying tactics (both verbal and physical)

The greatest value in martial arts training is not in learning how to fight, but rather in developing the best of your character and sharing it with others. Our Character Development Program ensures that your child cultivates the highest level of discipline, integrity, and honor on their jiu-jitsu journeys.

Every two months, we host an ultra-fun party called Gracie Game Day for kids who’ve shown significant progress in developing the featured character trait. Kids earn points at home in order to qualify for game day, so don’t be surprised if your child is overly excited about making their bed and doing they chores!

While trying to teach my five-year-old her ABC’s, I showed her a picture of a cat and asked “what letter does this start with?” Because she wasn’t getting it, I gave her a hint and held up my hand like a C. Her face lights up and she exclaims, “oh, so NOT a monkey grip!” 🫣Homeschool fail, but jiu-jitsu for the win!

(Photo is of my seven year old who DOES know both her ABC’s and jiu-jitsu grips AND was cooperative for the picture)

We had so much fun playing games to celebrate Gracie Game Day! The extra space in the gym was enjoyed by all. I’m wondering though, do you play “What time is it Mr Wolf?” Or “ …Mr Fox?”

Jiu-jitsu for everyone.

People often ask us if they are too old, too weak, too out of shape, too _______ to start jiu-jitsu. Since Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is based on leverage, timing, and technique, there are no size or strength or age requirements to begin this art. In fact, it was designed to give the weak a chance to defeat the strong.

If you are on the fence about starting jiu-jitsu, take a note from these wonderful ladies and gentlemen. They range in age from 11-77, different sizes and shapes, varying levels of athletic ability…all learning together and supporting each other on this journey. Their only regret is that they did not start sooner.

If you don’t start now, then when?

Our last class of 2023! We are so grateful for such a wonderful group of students: adults, kids AND their parents. We look forward to watching all of you learn, grow and crush your training goals. Additionally, we can’t wait to meet courageous new faces in 2024–those of you who will step out of your comfort zone and invest the time it takes to be street (and bully) ready!

See you next year on the mats!

Every day, I open my closet and see all my clean gis, unused, hanging neatly in a row. Sadly, they have been that way for a while, and will be for several more months while I recover from hip surgery. Even though surgery was necessary, it is easy to feel discouraged during a long recovery like this. The delay in my progress towards blue belt and instructor certification is frustrating, and I’m also faced with more free time to dwell on it. So this is me (Jenni-Lee) talking to me, getting myself out of a rut.

Some tips for when you are injured or recovering and need to take a break from training:

1. Embrace and accept rest. Rest is a gift from God. Additionally, it is imperative for proper healing. It is OK to do nothing during a season of recovery.

2. Watch videos. Life gets busy, and you don’t always have time to prepare for every class by watching the lesson videos. But when you are taking some time off from training, watch the videos in their entirety. They are a wealth of information, and free with your Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Sioux Falls membership.

3. Learn by watching. Come to class anyway. Take notes. Walk around, answer new students’ questions, and solo the technique without a partner as you progress to wellness.

4. Listen to your body. When you think you are ready to return, wait another week or two. If you had surgery, only return with the approval of your doctor.

See you soon on the mats!

A quote from one of our recent Google reviewers:

"I'm a new student and it's been awesome ! We have members who are old, young, athletic, non-athletic, bigger, smaller, stronger, weaker, taller, shorter.... you get the point. They do a great job of welcoming all new members and creating a challenging yet safe & positive environment for learning Jiu Jitsu. If you are even slightly interested in Jiu Jitsu, I feel you owe it to yourself to look into Gracie Jiu Jitsu Sioux Falls!" -Jay

Congratulations to Adam on earning his fourth stripe! Adam was our very first Gracie Combatives student and we are so proud of how far he’s come. He is someone who we feel great about pairing up with a brand new student because of his high level of concern for safety, his knowledge of the techniques, and his passion for jiu-jitsu. Currently, he is faithfully attending Reflex Development classes in addition to regular Combatives classes in order to sharpen his skills and reflexes in preparation for testing for his Combatives belt. Keep up the great work, Adam!

Not only does this apply to our jiu-jitsu, it also applies beautifully to life, business and relationships.

Unity.

One of our core values.

We wear a white gi to show unity.

Gossip will not be tolerated. All concerns about another student or instructor must be taken directly to the head instructor.

Our instructors conduct all classes in a cooperative training environment and are committed to ensuring that every new student has an informative, enjoyable experience regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability. We expect experienced students to contribute positively to all new students.

I love how this photo encapsulates our core value of unity. Students helping each other out. We are not fighting each other, rather we are preparing for the enemy outside of the room.

Join us for Gracie Combatives class 5 tonight, Guillotine choke and punch block series. These techniques could save your life! The time is NOW to learn how to defend yourself. Message us for more info about starting your 10-day free trial. See you on the mats!
