During Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we celebrated our program’s 7th Anniversary, hosted an open house for prospective boxers and their families and shared testimonials from the incredible boxers who are fighting back against Parkinson’s every day.

We also want to recognize our Rock Steady Boxing Volunteer Cornermen, who provide a stand-by assist and keep the fighters safe as the coaches push them to try challenging exercises. These important volunteers are the backbone of our program. They help put on gloves, provide that fresh drink and are encouraging and motivating to our boxers.

“We could NOT run our program without these amazing individuals!” said Rock Steady Boxing Program Director Lisa Howard. “They truly help so much in all our classes from running stations and helping 1:1 with our fighters! We appreciate them so much!”

On April 16, we hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Party to thank our remarkable volunteers for their contributions to this program. Boxers organized a classic “Dating Game” where two volunteers got to choose between three bachelors for a night on the town. Everyone laughed along as these crazy bachelors competed for the volunteer’s affection. After the program, everyone enjoyed delicious treats. Thank you to all our volunteers for all you do!

This week, we are recognizing Ray T., also known as “Sugar,” one of our best fighters at Rock Steady Boxing at The Inn on Westport.

Ray shared that, “I was interested in Rock Steady Boxing because studies identifying the importance of exercise as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease symptoms were coming out with increasing frequency. Boxing was one of these that showed specific benefits. One of the most surprising things about the classes was how the class benefits go beyond that offered by the exercise itself. It has become a support group with newfound friends all facing similar challenges.

My favorite part of class is the get to know you question during warm up. It is great for team-building. The variety and intensity of the workouts are great and are tailored to suit each of our individual needs. And the occasional ‘out of the gym’ outings are always great.

The bottom line is, IT WORKS and its fun! There are others I know diagnosed about the same time I was. Those that joined Rock Steady Boxing all seem to be doing better than those that haven’t joined a similar structured exercise program!”

Introducing Monte “McGyver Mad-Dog” P., who has been boxing since 2017.

Monte shared, “After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in December 2012, and not receiving much help from doctors, I spent five years researching and attending support groups. I learned about the South Dakota Parkinson’s Foundation’s annual conference. There I met Rock Steady Boxing Program Director Lisa H. who sold me on trying it out.

I enjoy the beginning and end of class. The get-to-know-you questions supports and bonds us all. I enjoy working out and interacting. Then closing the class with a positive cheesy cheer. I would recommend this class to others with Parkinson’s because of the camaraderie, support and the information is valuable. Lisa is a super coach who encourages and prods us along the way. When I learned of my dementia, she added some brain games to our exercise program to help everyone fighting the cognitive deficits Parkinson’s may bring. She has created an excellent program to meet our needs.”

One of our star-fighters is “Mad Molly.” She has been with Rock Steady Boxing since 2017.

Molly L. shared, “I had heard that the workouts were good. I wasn’t in an exercise class at the time and I thought the boxing component sounded fun. I am surprised by how much stronger I feel when doing Rock Steady Boxing – both physically and mentally. My favorite part of the class is the ‘Cheesy cheer’ at the end of the class. I know I have spent another one and a half hours fighting Parkinson’s. I would recommend RSB to others diagnosed with Parkinson’s because it is fun! I feel better and the social part as added other benefits as well.”

Keep on fighting, Molly!

Introducing Bob J., better known as “Stinger,” a force to be reckoned with in the fight against Parkinson’s at Rock Steady Boxing at The Inn on Westport.

Bob shared, “I first found about Rock Steady Boxing in April of 2017 at the annual Parkinson’s conference. I didn’t know of anything about it before then. It appeared to be a big help to people with Parkinson’s, so I thought I would give it a try. Also, I did things to stay in shape so this would help as well. The most surprising thing has been how effective this has been. You always hear about how good something is, but this really lives up to the hype. I like the variety of exercises that make up each class. I like the core exercises because they build up overall strength. I would recommend this to others because it WORKS! These classes have become like a support group where we find out what is helpful to our classmates, also we have made many new friends.”

Thanks for sharing your story, Bob!

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, degenerative neurological disorder that affects more than 10 million individuals worldwide. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and our goal is to help raise awareness of Parkinson’s and provide support and resources to those impacted by the disease.

Rock Steady Boxing at The Inn on Westport, an affiliate program of Rock Steady Boxing Inc., enables individuals with Parkinson’s to fight back through non-contact boxing-style fitness programs that are designed to improve quality of life, senses of efficacy and self-worth. Exercise plays a crucial role in managing Parkinson's by slowing its progression, reducing pain, and enhancing a person's ability to stay independent. The program inspires maximum effort in order to reap the “neuro-protective” benefits of exercise and delay the symptoms of this disease.

Rock Steady Boxing at The Inn on Westport is looking for volunteer cornermen to assist our fighters in class!

What is a cornerman? A cornerman is an invaluable aspect of our Rock Steady Boxing program. These are volunteers who provide “stand-by” assistance to our boxers to keep them safe as we challenge them during our classes. Cornermen provide the safety of a spotter when participants do difficult drills, helping boxers know what station to move to next. Truly they are a great source of encouragement for the boxer and keep that boxer motivated on each exercise.

Our program has cornermen of all ages, retired, working individuals, college students. All you need is a love of exercise and helping people.

Class times where volunteers are needed include:
Monday – Thursday: 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.
Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays: 1:00 – 2:15 p.m.

If you are interested in this fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity, please call Rock Steady Boxing Program Director Lisa Howard at 605-362-1210.
