The epee is the largest and heaviest of the three weapons (epee, sabre, foil) used in fencing.π€Ί
There are no rules regarding priority and a lack of right of way with epee. The entire body is a valid target area, as shown in red.

Proper posture helps us in all areas of life, including Kendo. Utilizing the right muscles and having mind + muscle connections helps with proper form and preventing injury.
β Keep your head up and chin neutral
β Pull your shoulders back slightly to stand straight, but don't tense them up to your ears
β Tighten your core muscles, particularly your abs and glutes!
β Maintain balance between both feet, with legs strong and the left leg bent, ready for movement

"Debana" requires anticipating your opponent's intent to attack, and attacking them right before they attack you.
This graphic demonstrates the proper foot and sword timing for a debana men.

In a fencing bout, when a hit is made, the referee will stop the bout, describe the action, and decide whether to award a touch. The referee always clearly raises their hand on the side of the fencer for whom they have awarded a point.

Shinpan are the official judges in a kendo match, responsible for determining and calling valid strikes and ensuring fair play among the competitors.
β’ A shinpan typically a high-ranking practitioner, usually 3rd Dan or higher.
β’ During a match they must have clear verbal communication, and unbiased, active judgement.
β’ The flags they use to call points are shinpanki. The color they hold up coordinates with the mejirushi worn by the player they believe to have scored a point.

Mejirushi is a red or white ribbon worn on the back of the do armor to distinguish competitors during sparring matches. Competitors may be required to provide their own (so always bring a set just in case!) and have to know how to tie them on correctly.

In martial arts, attitude is everything.
It's important to show respect to instructors and classmates; lose gracefully and win humbly; be thankful for all interactions.
Having a good attitude improves any experience for both yourself and those around you π
