Meet John, a 72-year-old Lighthouse Swim safety kayak volunteer! 🎉 Every volunteer has a story, here’s his.

“I’ve participated in 30 open-water swims, so I know firsthand how daunting being in the water can be. There’s nothing more comforting than seeing safety staff nearby when fatigue, cramps, or other challenges arise.

That’s why I’m volunteering for the Lighthouse Swim. I’ll be there to help swimmers stay on course, offer them a place to rest if needed, and most importantly, remind them that they should only do as much as they can. Even a partial crossing is a great accomplishment!

I started competing at age 61 and, now at 72, I’ve completed 6 Spartan Races, 2 bike races in Central Park, 10 skyscraper stair climbs, and 32 triathlon and AquaBike competitions. The medals and race bibs are great, but the memories, people you meet, and opportunity to support charitable causes are what make every event so rewarding.

Feeding Westchester is a cause that means a lot to me. It’s easy to forget that even in our own communities, families face food insecurity and sometimes have to make impossible choices between everyday necessities and putting food on the table. I believe it’s crucial that we look out for one another and support those in need. ❤️

A fun fact about me: I’ve been kayaking since 2015, some of my favorite places to explore via kayak are Cold Spring and Bear Mountain!” 🛶
