I met Brandon Jones only a year ago, he was a member of my HEROIC Public Speaking cohort, but the impact he made on my life will stay with me.

Last week, Brandon passed away at just 46 years old after his battle with cancer. Gone far too soon.

During a keynote speech about his fight with cancer, he shared two statements I’ll never forget:

“Time is the only currency we spend that we don’t know the balance of.”

“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”

His words remind me to be intentional with the time I have. To tell people they matter. To be present with those I love. And to recognize that helping someone else shine never diminishes my own light.

I’ll honor Brandon by putting that wisdom into practice. I hope his words inspire you, too.

Brandon, you lit more candles than you ever knew. Your light lives on in the people you encouraged, inspired, and uplifted, including me.

Earth has lost a ray of light, but Heaven has gained an angel.

Rest in peace, brother.

There was a time when a bad hair day could mess with my confidence. These days? I’ve got chai tea and a purpose.

Yes, I still care how I look, but I care way more about how I live, lead and how I show up for the people I love, lead, and serve.

The hair will have its own day. I’ve got more important things to focus on… When you know your purpose, you know your true identity the person you are inside, not only outside.

We’re all a work in progress and the journey of becoming the person God created us to be is indeed a journey of a lifetime.

Leadership begins with understanding the people we hope to lead.
Serving teaches us to listen, put our ego aside, and earn trust.
A title can give you authority. Service gives people a reason to follow.

Sometimes, even when we believe God has a plan, we need a reminder to trust Him with ours.

This morning, I needed that reminder.

The past two years have been a season of tremendous personal growth and some significant choices.

With both of my kids grown and mostly self-sufficient (Of course…Dad will always be on call), I’ve been asking myself:

What do I want this next chapter of my life to look like?
Where can I best use my experience and abilities?
What impact do I want my speaking, writing, coaching, and mentoring to have on the people I love, lead, and serve?

These are questions about purpose, stewardship, and the legacy I’m building through how I live.

Over the past ten years, I’ve learned the importance of making and keeping commitments to myself. Then today’s verse reminded me where those commitments need to be grounded:

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” —Proverbs 16:3 NIV

I’m an unapologetic Christian. I believe God has a plan for each of us. But we must put in the work. Yet I can get so focused on putting in the work and figuring out my next steps that I forget to seek His direction.

For me, this was a reminder to bring Him my questions, my work, and my decisions and remain willing to be redirected.

Maybe you’re facing some of those same questions. Growing. Navigating change. Wondering what comes next.

You don’t need every answer today. But you do need to take an honest look at where you are and choose your next step.

And you don’t have to take it alone.
