Sometimes Jiu Jitsu classes look a little chaotic from the sidelines.
Kids are moving, talking, forgetting, trying again, getting distracted, solving problems, and learning alongside dozens of other students doing the same thing.
What many people don’t realize is that Jiu Jitsu is one of the most complex activities a child can learn. They’re not just memorizing movements. They’re learning body awareness, balance, timing, problem-solving, emotional regulation, teamwork, resilience, and how to stay calm in uncomfortable situations.
Progress doesn’t always look the same, either!
One child may be learning how to stay focused for an entire class. Another may be building confidence speaking to training partners. Another may be learning how to lose gracefully. Another may be developing the technical skills needed for their next belt.
From the outside, those lessons can be hard to see. From the coach’s perspective, they’re all important.
We aren’t just teaching Jiu Jitsu. We’re helping kids develop skills that will serve them both on and off the mats for years to come!

One of the reasons I think Jiu Jitsu continues to grow is that it provides something many adults struggle to find: a sense of community.
When we’re younger, we’re surrounded by opportunities to build friendships. We spend years in school, sports, clubs, and college alongside the same people, sharing experiences and creating lasting connections. Then adulthood arrives. Careers, families, commutes, and responsibilities take over, and for many people those built in social circles can slowly disappear.
What I see every day on the mats is that Jiu Jitsu helps fill that gap. People walk through the door looking for exercise, self-defense skills, stress relief, or a new challenge. What they often don’t expect is the community they find along the way.
On the mats, professions, ages, and backgrounds matter a lot less than the willingness to learn and improve. You train together, struggle through hard rounds together, celebrate milestones together, and encourage each other through setbacks. Over time, training partners become friends, and for many people, the academy becomes one of the few places in adulthood where they feel genuinely connected to a group of people working toward a common goal.
Of course, Jiu Jitsu builds confidence, improves fitness, and teaches valuable self-defense skills. But if you ask many long term practitioners why they keep coming back, the answer often has as much to do with the people as it does the techniques. The friendships, support, and sense of belonging are difficult to replace. In a world where so many adults feel isolated or disconnected, having a tribe again is incredibly valuable.
If you’ve been thinking about trying Jiu Jitsu, we’d love to have you join us. Come try a free week of classes and experience the community for yourself.
Have you found friendships or a sense of belonging through Jiu Jitsu? We’d love to hear your story in the comments. 👇

Every woman deserves to feel harder to intimidate.
Not because the world is always dangerous.
But because confidence changes the way you carry yourself, respond under pressure, and move through the world.
This Saturday at Renzo Gracie Snoqualmie, our Women’s Self-Defense Workshop will focus on realistic situations in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment with zero ego and no experience required.
We’ll be working on:
• Avoiding and escaping being cornered
• Basic falling and ground safety
• What to do if someone tries to drag you by your hands or feet
Whether you’re coming for yourself, your daughter, your wife, your friend, or simply because learning these skills feels important, this workshop is designed to leave you feeling more capable, aware, and confident.
You do not need to be athletic.
You do not need martial arts experience.
You just need to start.
