Good morning! We want to talk about what herbs are good for certain ailments, but first there are important things when talking about growing your own medicinal herbs. Like learning about preparing and storing these herbs. Knowing your plant BEFORE experimenting is the first law! Educate yourself.

In some cases, using homegrown herbs won't take too much planning or thought. Mint, for example (if you've grown it, you're smiling with a knowing) as mint leaves will just keep on growing and you can just pick off the leaves and immediately boil into a soothing tea. But... know that certain herbs are very powerful medicines that need to be stored and prepared intentionally, with great respect. Storing herbs the right way will improve their shelf life and potency. Some plants shouldn't even be used at all for home use, such as Foxglove. Foxglove contains a potent chemical that can cause heart failure. This common garden plant contains digitals and other cardiac glycosides. These affect the heart. Again, KNOW YOUR PLANTS BEFORE EXPERIMENTING! Just because something is natural and from the earth doesn't mean it can't be dangerous in some form.

It's best to store many medicinal herbs such as those for teas, in their dried form. Take some time to learn how to dry your herbs, especially if you live in humid areas. Mold can develop on improperly dried herbs which makes them less safe for consumption.

While drying is best for some medicinal herbs, preparing tinctures, salves, extractions, or essential oils is better for others. Be sure to read about any medicinal herb before you grow. We will also be going over each of these methods of preparation.

That's all for now. Thanks for your questions and remember to have a groovy day!
