The East Race Waterway will be closed for the entire 2026 Season due to scheduled construction. This temporary closure will allow for the installation of a new concrete walkway, replacing the existing wooden bridge between Seitz Park and Howard Park.
This project is an important step in improving accessibility, safety, and the overall experience for all visitors. These upgrades to the East Race area will ensure the space remains enjoyable and sustainable for years to come.
We appreciate your patience and continued support during this time and look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 2027 season!

We'll miss you, Bob! 🥹
Robert E. Heiderman, affectionally known as Cheeseburger Bob, Bicycle Bob, and Brother Bob, hereinafter referred to as “Bob,” retired from the City of South Bend after 60 years of service.
If you’ve taken a ride down the East Race Waterway or a stroll along the Coal Line Trail, it's likely that you've run into Bob and were greeted with a warm smile or a friendly wave. Today, we want to take a moment to recognize and honor Bob’s service to our city.
From working the opening day at East Race Waterway to the very last day of the waterway’s 40th season, Bob’s dedication and hard work never wavered. In addition to his role as East Race Waterway Supervisor, Bob held several positions with the Parks Department, including Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Swim Lessons Instructor, Howard Park Ice Rink Guard, and Aquatic Supervisor.
He was also instrumental in preparing the department and the community with vital water safety skills as a certified Water Safety Instructor.
There are so many known and unknown ways Bob has positively impacted our community, and we can’t say thank you enough. Your key to the City of South Bend is well-deserved.
Enjoy retirement, Bob! We can’t wait to share a story or a wave around South Bend sometime soon.
