TIGHT HIPS + LOW BACK PAIN?
Healing Back & Hip pain with Matthew Booska
You’ve been stretching the wrong thing.
SLIDE 1 — 90/90 Hip Lift
RESET THE PELVIS FIRST
Stack ribs over pelvis, breathe into your back ribcage. Pulls you out of anterior tilt and opens up
rotation.
SLIDE 2 — Posterior Hip Capsule Stretch
OPEN THE BACK OF THE HIP
Shift back and rotate into that hip — creating space in the back of the hip to access internal
rotation.
SLIDE 3 — IR Block Squeeze
STOP STRETCHING. START OWNING IT.
Actively squeeze into internal rotation instead of just hanging in a stretch.
SLIDE 4 — Hip Airplanes
CONTROL IT ON ONE LEG
Rotate the femur under the pelvis, standing. This is the rotation you actually use to walk, run, and
squat.
SLIDE 5 — Wall Roller IR Drill
TAKE THE ROTATION INTO A HINGE
Drive the knee into the roller, then hinge back — without losing the rotation you just built.
SLIDE 6 — Heel-Elevated Goblet Squat
LOAD BOTH HIPS
Shifts your center of gravity back so you can sit deeper and stay upright — you’ll actually feel your
glutes, no banded walks required.
SLIDE 7 — Front-Foot-Elevated Split Squat (contralateral load)
LOAD ONE HIP AT A TIME
Loading the opposite hand forces the stance hip to stabilize and rotate under weight.
SLIDE 8 — Toe-Wedge Staggered RDL (contralateral load)
TURN MOBILITY INTO STRENGTH
Wedge + offset load bias the stance hip into rotation — inside a real hinge. This is the payoff.
MOBILITY ISN’T HOW FAR YOU CAN STRETCH.
It’s ACCESS → CONTROL → LOAD.
One common reason tight hips and low backs show up together: limited hip rotation forces you to
find motion somewhere else — usually your back.
Give your hips more options. Then make those options strong.
