The very early stages of setting up an outfitter and guide service for hunting in the NC area. Chec

That rainbow hits a piece of public land at risk of being sold off by a piece of horrible legislation by from Utah and in Mt.

What makes it even worse is Sheehy is a fellow SOF veteran and is going to take that away from the people including those who have fought and died to have access to these public lands for our generation and everyone after it.

The second photo was the from the end of that rainbow taken exactly one year before when I traveled to help assist on a fully guided hunt donated to a veteran who had been badly wounded in combat. The wilderness and backcountry heal like no place else I have experienced. Without public land in the west that would have never happened.

As we speak the VA is near conclusion on a multi-year study based of the Accelerating Veterans Recovery Outdoor Act looking to better use public lands and waters to help provide outdoor adjunct therapy and recreation for veterans as a way to heal From. Org visible and invisible wounds. Public lands are critical to supporting that process.

Regardless of your politics, public lands are uniquely American and worthy of fighting for, so I won’t stand by and watch this land grab to sell off wild places and hope you won’t either. Call, write, show up, support great orgs like and the countless other organizations that stand and fight for public lands and waters.

Not now. Not ever. PUBLIC LANDS = FREEDOM

This first photo was taken by a combat photographer on the tarmac in Kandahar circa 2008 before 1 Fury conducted an AASLT into the Helmand. That night I was on the ARF when Flipper 75 was shot down in the HRV outside of Sangin and what ensued that night and the next day was nothing short of a hellish battle. Unfortunately, the crew was lost along with a UK and Canadian combat camera man, one of whom had taken the first picture before boarding the CH47. War is hell.

Today marks what is probably my last Memorial Day in uniform. I’ve had a great career, over 20 years and am blessed with a loving wife and 3 amazing kids. I have had the opportunity to do what many haven’t, they were gone too soon.

My oldest namesake after CPT Paul Pena a friend, roommate and amazing man. He died leading from the front in Afghanistan in 2010 as a rifle company commander in the 82d ABN.

2 weeks later another great man and friend CPT Dan Whitten was killed a few provinces away, leading from the front as a rifle company commander in the 82d ABN.

6 months later CPT Jason Holbrook died leading his ODA as a special forces detachment commander in 3rd SFG, he was leading from the front.

10 years later another friend and classmate CDR Brian Bourgeois, CO of ST8 died from injuries sustained from a fast rope incident, leading from the front.

Today I remember them as I do everyday and try to be the best each of them embodied as combat leaders, friends, husbands, and dads. They were the very best of us and left this place too soon.

Till we meet again on the high ground gentlemen.

Help NCWRC out if you observe any Turkeys in the next coming weeks.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission seeks public assistance in reporting observations of wild turkeys this summer. Through Aug. 31, wild turkey sightings by volunteers and Commission staff will be recorded and submitted to management biologists.

Observation information gives an indication of annual wild turkey productivity, gobbler carryover and other population trends — all of which help the Commission manage the state’s turkey population.

Participants can enter their observations online in the field from any smart phone or small-screen device. New volunteers can participate at: ncwildlife.org/turkeyobservation

The wild turkey makes a damn good adversary. Cold nights give way to crisp mornings where the sounds of the gobbler echo across the landscape. For us, it's the beginning of it all. It's a good time to shake the rust off and get better at the pursuit. Good luck out there.
