One lift, three intents. Swipe to see where each phase lives on the force–time curve of a CMJ.

Braking → the athlete has to absorb and stop bodyweight. Options: tempo eccentric squats (4–5s down), weight-releaser or accentuated-eccentric squats, depth drop landings, rapid eccentric drops, single-leg eccentric step-downs.

Amortization → the “switch or “transition” phase
Options: pause squats on a box or in the bottom position, dead-stop squats from pins, long isometric holds at the depth where velocity hits zero, non-countermovement squat jumps.

Propulsive → force applied through extension until takeoff. Options: accommodating resistance (chains/bands), VBT-guided speed squats, loaded jumps/trap bar jumps, contrast pairs (heavy squat into a jump).

How much time an athlete spends in each phase is not the same for everyone.

Early offseason usually buys eccentric capacity and general strength; mid-offseason is where the transition and isometric work pays off; late offseason shifts toward speed-strength and intent as competition gets close. Training age matters just as much. A younger athlete needs to own the descent and build a base before chasing bar velocity, while an experienced athlete may only need a small dose of propulsive work to sharpen an already strong jump.

Then let the plates decide. If braking RFD and braking impulse are low, that is where the block goes. If and time to takeoff is slow, train the turn. If propulsive impulse and peak velocity lag, load and cue the drive.

Test, observe the athlete, read the data, pick the variation that fits the gap 🧠

We didn’t pull each guy’s best early jump and stack it against his best late jump. That’s how you manufacture a number. We averaged the first three tests against the last three — start to finish, off-effort days pulled out beforehand, and only athletes who actually put in a full summer counted. 27 of 41 qualified ✔️

Now the part nobody posts: not every athlete on this list was in a phase where jump height was expected to climb. Some came in needing raw strength before speed and power work would give them anything back. So they stayed in strength work longer instead of chasing a test their training wasn’t built for yet.

Force plate numbers aren’t a line that only goes up. In a heavy accumulation block we expect output to sit flat or come down. That’s fatigue, and it’s the cost of the adaptation. The rise comes later, when volume drops and the work gets expressed. Judging every athlete against the same upward curve on the same week is how you end up training the test instead of the athlete.
