Known as the Beast of the East, The Assaults
is the Southeast's premier annual road cycling event. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi.
Event is currently on hold due to extensive repairs on the route from hurricaine Helene. In 1975 – long before the days of personal bucket lists – Spartanburg, South Carolina native John Bryan, an early Freewheelers member, set out to ride from his hometown to the top of Mt. Still no ride this year, 2025. The Hurricane and the water main project are the reasons. Nothing set up for 2026 right now. Not sure how the hurricane impacted the water main project.
The Mt. Mitchell State Park has an infrastructure project - to replace the water main in the middle of the road going up to the park. It could happen this year, therefore the Park will not let us know if we can ride until November. There is too much planning and financial expenditures that must happen before November. The FCA board has determined that it is too financially risky for us to put on the Assaults for 2025.
We will be working on an alternative ride.
