FINAL RUN OF THE 2026 SEASON. NO. 34:

Sometimes you just have to ask yourself, WWGD (What Would Greg Do?). As far as club communication goes, we can tell you he’d make darn sure club emails got out on time! Think that’s just idle talk? Then pray tell why he took the time out of his VERY BUSY schedule to send not one but TWO separate “don’t forget to send the email this week!” text reminders (the first being Sunday evening, the next Monday morning)? You think he just likes wasting time? Think again. That’s probably AT LEAST 8 seconds of his life he’ll never get back (maybe more, as the grammar was impeccable and the message direct). Nope. We’re sure GDWGD (Greg Did What Greg Did) because he loves the club and he wants to make sure his fellow club members get only the best and most up to date club information ON TIME. After all, aside from being the person you definitely wouldn’t want to follow on a run (unless you’re Mark or just don’t care if you run the correct route), he’s also the guy who’s taken time out of that same busy schedule to create some of our most _____________ routes (you fill in the blank). And to show our appreciation, we’re going to reward his persistent text reminding by not only getting the email out BEFORE Tuesday, but by running one of his master pieces: Oh Hiiiiilllllll No. As to WGDWGD (Why Greg Did What Greg Did) on this route, it’s because he wanted to create a route with hill repeats. Down and Up and Down and Up and Down again if you’re doing the 3ish. If you’re doing the 5ish? It’s gonna be more of the same (mostly Up, as you’ll be going up through Lincoln Park). Thanks for the reminders Greg, and for your effort on behalf of the club. It is appreciated. See you this Tuesday at 6!

P.S. Greg, know you were really angling for Ye Ole Refrigerator, but it's getting to be too darn dark to run that one IN SEASON.

ALSO P.S. To everyone else, bring those flashlights, headlamps, reflective vests, etc.

Great turnout and effort from the club in the fourth and final BRRC XC Series race. Although we got edged out and came in second (by just two points!!!!), absent a torrent of alternative mathematics, we likely secured first place in the series. Another competitive year!

Run No. 33:

We’ve tried repeatedly to keep our minds focused on this week’s route, and this week’s route alone. Not to dwell on the past, nor look too far into the future. But after struggling for the past 24 minutes, we give up. This past Sunday the club took home its third 1st place finish in a row in the BRRC XC Race Series, and we have a very real chance this Sunday to complete the race series sweep. For more information on how you can help, come chat with us in person at this Tuesday’s run, email us at [email protected], or just throw caution to the wind and sign up and run the final 5k in the series, this SATURDAY (OCTOBER 24th), 8 AM, at Mead High School. There’s no limit on how many folks can run for the team, so come one come all. Now back to this week’s route: Manito and Back. It’s not nearly as exciting as what happened or what could happen this Sunday. But it’s a pretty good route to run during civil twilight, which is exactly where we’ll be starting this week’s run. With that said, you should probably bring your head lamps, flashlights, reflective gear, etc., so you can both see and be seen. Especially if you’re gonna head out for the 5ish. But enough nagging. See you all this Tuesday at 6!

Oh, and in case you were wondering how to pronounce the word "Manito," here's how at least one person out there thinks it should be done. https://youtu.be/2-ROom7xJFM?si=7ODzxVncU3cj1-6h

Run no. 32:

It’s hard to believe there are only 3 official runs left in the 2026 season. But that’s mainly due to the fact someone lied to us the other day when we happened to ask for the time. You see, they said it was 1:30, but it was really only 1:26 (FWIW, we just so happened to see a clock right after they responded, so it wasn’t like we didn’t trust them to begin with - although we probably shouldn’t have). So, understandably, we’ve developed some trust issues. But then again, aren’t we the ones that determine how many weeks are in the season? Wow, who would have thunk such a small bit of dishonesty could end up making us question ourselves?????? Truly powerful stuff. Speaking of seemingly trivial lies and the tremendous impact they can have upon society, remember when the City Park’s Department closed the upper portion of Cliff Park for repairs while insinuating the repairs were right around the corner? Well, that was 2022, AND WE’RE STILL WAITING!!!! In the meantime, every time we’ve run St. Helens Fire, we’ve been greeted halfway up its stairs with a crummy chain link fence and a lack of explanation. Sadly, we fear this week will be no different, as we wind our way over to Sacred Heart, CROSS AT THE CROSS WALK, and then head up Grand to Cliff Drive, make a left at Stevens, and then into the heart of the park. And mark our words, once we head up those steps, there’s gonna be that damn fence, and all will turn back around and down. The 3ish will then head east on 13th and back to home base via Grand and Sumner. The 5ish will take Sound west to Wall, up to and around Cannon Hill Park, and then back on 18th, through the bottom part of Manito Park, down Grand, and then likewise back to home via Sumner. Try not to get too jaded when you see that darn fence. Instead, just think of how great it’s gonna be when the top is open again… someday. See you all this Tuesday at 6!!!!!

Run No. 31:

Did you know that in every job that must be done there’s an element of fun? You find the fun, and snap! The job’s a game! From that point forward, every task you undertake becomes a piece of cake. A lark! A spree! That, and if you happen to need medicine, a spoon full of sugar will not only help it go down, but it will do so “in the most delightful way!” Don’t take our word for it. Nope. Take the word of an umbrella carrying flying nanny unleashed upon the world by the Walt Disney Corporation in the early 1960s, just a few years after Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz released the original Theraflu. Wait a minute…. you don’t suppose… were the two related? Was Mary Poppins merely giving sound advice, or was she a brilliant subliminal marketing campaign devised to grease the tracks for some of the most delicious tasting cold medicine ever invented? We’d like to think it the former, for beyond the wisdom contained in the chorus of her song (at least in its most literal application) there really appears to exist a very powerful metaphor in the remainder. One that can be applied to this week’s run. That is, while something may at first seem difficult, fun can be found within. And, once you’re done, from that point forward, other difficult tasks might seem easy, a lark, or even… dare we say… a spree (whatever that means). Let’s find out together as we run Uphill Domianoes. Surely running up most of the Ben Burr Trail, then up 9th, and then up and around Altamont should provide an adequate test of the “Poppins Theorem.” But if you’re feeling that’s not enough, go ahead and run the 5ish route, as it’ll take you over to and up Green St., across 14th, up Cook to 17th, and then all the way over to Rockwood and back. You’ll definitely feel better once it’s all done, no doubt. But will it make your next run all the easier? Let’s give it a shot this Tuesday at 6!

Great job at the Qualchan 12k! The Club captured its second FIRST PLACE team finish in a row in the BRRC XC Series. For those keeping track, the club has finished FIRST in both of the races thus far. And for those who have not been keeping track, that’s ALL of the races in the series thus far. With two more races to go we’re in a pretty good spot, but it’s not over. Next two runs are October 18th (at Audubon Park again-the riverside stare park airstrip course is not open due to the fires) and October 24th at Mead High School. Once again, great job. Thanks to everyone who came out and raced!

Big thank you to James Dalton for his very generous gesture in picking up the tab last night for club members for his big birthday! Happy Birthday James!

Run No. 27:

It was the best of parks, it was the worst of parks, it was the route of wisdom, it was the route of foolishness, it was the epoch of relief, it was the epoch of agony, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, and blah-bitty blah blah. Some of us, for reasons never quite explained (or more likely never quite paid attention to) had to memorize the literary passage upon which the preceding sentence was based (and largely plagiarized). Perhaps it was so that later in life we too might make use of paradox and anaphora to establish the extreme dualities, social contradictions, and turbulence, not so much of the French Revolution, but rather, the route we will be running this Tuesday, September 8th. Set in contemporary Spokane, Washington, A Tale of Two Parks will take us through two parks with contrasting histories and strikingly similar fates. Liberty Park, once Spokane’s grandest, gave way in the 1960s to the progress of Interstate 90, while Grant Park, on the other hand, was quadrupled in size around that same time due to… drum roll… the atrophy the losses to Liberty Park. At the time, State Highway Commission chairman Elmer Huntley was quoted as saying, “It is our intention to leave the city with as good a park facility as what we interrupted.” If you look at any old photos of Liberty Park, you will find that to be, as former Gonzaga basketball star Ronnie Turiaf (from France no less) might say, “a bold lie.” But they are, nevertheless, two parks, and we’ll run through both. While the 3ish is more than enough, should you choose the 5ish, you’ll have earned the right to say, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” See you this Tuesday at 6!
